New guy / new project

Hey all,
Been lurking here on and off for the last few years, but finally decided to sign up after I picked up my latest toy, a '72 GMC C-1500 Sierra. Pics below.

She has some rust/rot here and there, but altogether it's in pretty darn good shape for a central IL truck (I assume it's from around here, but don't know any history on it). The motor was supposedly rebuilt recently and has an RV cam. I believe that to be true, since it runs great and I can tell by the idle that the cam isn't bone stock. I assume it's the original 350 engine, but will have to run the numbers to find out for sure. Has headers and duals and will sound great once I get all the leaky paper gaskets fixed.

I'm guessing that "Sierra" was kind of the middle of the road package between "Custom" and "Sierra Grande"? It's pretty well optioned. A/C, PS, PB, rear slider, cargo light, rear leaf springs, upper and lower body trim, etc. According to the glove box sticker it has "cheyenne equipment".

It also has rally wheels on it that the PO was nice enough to swap out to narrow fronts and wide rears! The rears are 8" but I'm not sure if the fronts are 6.5" or 7". Doesn't really matter to me, at least it's already set up! They also had the seat redone/replaced nicely.

Needs a lot of work, but it's a cool old daily driver for now. I'm not going to have the kind of play money to get the body fixed up for a while, but I plan on getting it in top mechanical shape little by little over the next few months. I'm sure you'll hear from me a lot in the future!

Welcome aboard, looks like a nice start. It's interesting that the doors are more rotted out then the rockers. Like you said, it does seem to be pretty clean for an Illinois truck though.

Heh, yeah that's the first thing that I noticed, too. I looked underneath and the inner rockers are rusty though. Don't know how the rockers survived so well on the outside. I got it from a guy who traded it from a guy who got it from a guy... you know, one of THOSE deals. Hard telling what the history of it is. I've always liked these trucks and LOVE the GMC style grill above all. Been looking for one to play around with for a long time and when this one popped up locally for a decent price I jumped all over it.

Pretty respectable truck I'd say. You will look good cruising in it..

Looks like a very solid truck. It seems like the bottom of door is the worst that I can see. I like the factory Bronze on these trucks. Goodluck with it.
