Question....Firewall Insulation Fasteners - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Dumb question, but is there a trick/technique/tool to install the firewall insulation retention fasteners? I have tried to put several in and have broken them all. I am not sure if there are other kinds, but what I have are the plastic barbed type.

We have had the original style rubber fasteners reproduced. I never have liked the plastic ones that everyone else offers, because they brake so easy and if you need to pull them out they are done for. I made a tool once that worked pretty good. If you take a small bolt that fits in the hole in the fastener kind of loose (I think the one I had was about 4" long), put a nut on first, then a washer. Adjust the nut so that when the bolt is inserted into the fastener there is 1/8 to 3/16" between the head of the fastener and the washer. This will stretch the fastener a little before the washer pushes on the head of the fastener. If you can find a bolt that is threaded all the way to the head you can put a washer and nut on it first and thread it all the way up to give a bigger surface to push against. Or you can clamp a small pair of Vise Grips on the bolt at a 90º angle and push against them.

Seems like the rubber ones would be pretty forgiving to install.
