Tilt Steering Coloumn

I am looking to buy a tilt steering coloumn for my 70 GMC. I am not wanting to spend big bucks for a IDIDIT type. My son is 6'6" and cant safely drive the truck without a tilt coloumn.

Any suggestions on where to get a fairly priced coloumn? What is a fair price?

Thanks,
Dusty

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

You won't really find a real truck tilt for a fair price these days, but you can still find you a van tilt and convert to fit in the truck and look stock. Trevor

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

There are a number of sources for truck tilts. Iditit is probably the top of the line. Search through the posts for tilt columns and posts by Kevsclassics. He rebuilds them. I don't off hand know what his run though.
The vans offer an alternative to the truck tilts. I think the useable van tilts run from early to late 70's and maybe a couple years after that.?
There are pics and info on how to modify them to work in our trucks in the FAQ section of these boards. And many threads on the same.

As a matter of fact here is the link to the FAQ index thread with a long list of how to's including the van tilts.

As a temporary alternative why not install a smaller diameter wheel? The truck wheel is about 17". You can find say a 14 or 15" wheel to make a little more room.

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

I'm personally a true believer in the benefits of a tilt column. I see a lot of conversation about the value of a tilt column to fit our trucks and the option to use a van tilt (never had much luck with the conversion columns). What I'm really curious to know is what is an unaltered, original, automatic tilt column worth. Let's say it's a column that's all there, not beat, and hasn't been modified. Any ideas on a reasonable price?

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

Have you scrolled through the parts for sale board? You'll get an idea there I'm sure.

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

Around $250-$325. They vary, heck they might be higher than that anymore. Already have one, and never really looked that hard at them on the parts board. Trevor

Thumbs up Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

Boog suggested I look through the parts board, I did, and I only found 2 tilt columns. One was a automatic tilt column that needed rebuilding, it was $280.00 (this included shipping). Another tilt was a completely rebuilt tilt column for a 4-speed, or for an automatic with a floor shifter. The asking price for this one was $450.00!!

I'm just curious, as I have two automatic tilt columns in my storage. One is destined for one of my trucks and the other has been promised to a friend. Boy, did he ever get a smoking deal!!

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

i bought a used one at carlisle 2 3 years ago needing a rebuilt along with the shiff lever blinker lever and maybe the blinker mechanism $225.00 . i decided to tride it for a reconditioned one priced at $525.00 . he gave me $200.00 off for my use one so for $325.00 i had me a beautifully reconditioned one with new levers . my friend just got one for $110.00 working condition needing new levers a cleaning and freash paint , we were high fiving . also if you go with a smaller wheel they got the shorter lever . good luck .

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

I just saw 6-8 tilts that were around $175.00 at the Moultrie GA swap meet. All were in good shape.

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

I just bought a fully rebuilt van tilt converted to truck tilt for about $240 but that was from a guy that lien saled a customer's truck and all the parts he bought for it. This exact tilt goes for about $500 or $600 from the Truck and Car Shop in Orange, CA.

Re: Tilt Steering Coloumn

I put a van tilt in my truck with a TH700 trans. How do I get the detents in the column to work with the trans? The van column was for a TH350. Does the detent from a later column with the key on it for a TH700 work in the earlier column?
