Laying frame my way, with your help.

Hey guys long time forum watcher first time poster..I figured it's time. I just bought a new used plasma cutter(thermal dynamics) and need a good project to really use it. So with my stick welder in one hand and my plasma torch in the other I want to lay out the frame on my 70 c-10. Here is a quick run down of my truck. In the front I have three inch drop coils with 1-1/2 coils cut off of them and a disc brake convert. In the rear I have leaf springs, so I flipped my axle over the wore out leafs and did a 3 inch c-notch...So now my truck sits 9 inches off the ground. Now here is my thoughts for the front is to z my frame 3 inches and buy 73-87 3 inch drop spindles and bags to bring the front down to the ground...Now the rear...I have a 67 shortbed rolling frame with factory coils in the back. So was thinking about z-ing the rear 5 inches just after the back of the cab then bolting bags in place of the coils, adding a big c-notch and calling it a day. I am not a fan of Z-ed frames but it sounds like you are on track. My question is how competent are you with that stick welder? Unless you are very good with a stick, I would consider having someone else do the welding.

Well as far as me being able to weld with a stick welder, I have about 12years of good practice. I work in a machine/fab shop. This isn't my first rodeo, I am able to produce a good weld. What would you use mig/stick/tig? thanks guys

well if you bag it with a 2 3/4" cupped LCA and 3" dropped spindles your laying the X memeber on the ground hard......

now you have to change your rear to trailing arms then put a large C Notch in the rear frame for axle clearance then fab the bag mounts ..done

absolutely nothing wrong with zing a frame its been done since the beginning of hot rodding and is probably the easiest way to lay out one of these trucks many people don't even take the motor out to do the z

oops, i just read springs and assumed coil springs lol. sorry for the mix up



to the op... i think the only way to lay frame with ta setup is to notch the frame where the ta would hit...or you can do it this way but i dont think you will lay frame...

As I mentioned if your qualified you can do just fine with stick welding. My preference would be TIG, but a MIG will do the job too.

You are correct, there is nothing wrong with Z'ing a frame "IF" you have the skills to do a competent job. Far too often this is suggested as a cheap and easy way to get the job done. My feelings are that this encourages the inexperienced to take on a task that is above their head and results in an unsafe vehicle.

Hey totally understand where your coming from. Z-ing a frame could be a cheap, dirty and unsafe way to get your truck low. I think if your going to do a "Z" you should be able to do it the right way..Now what is the right way? :

same here. if your good at welding, there is like 0 cost in the notches except for material...and it gets super low
