beat a turbo saub yesterday
Not bad- since my truck is a 3/4 ton with big tires. He stuck with me at first, but i reallys started walking away after 45+ miles per hour. I didnt shift into third till i let off around 60. My setup doesnt wake up till i hit atleast 3grand. I would have done even better if i did a break torque at the light. Im not used to racing or anything, so i didnt even think of it till after. It was at 4am in the morning and im pretty sure my exhaust is illegal... I'm currently using purple hooters which are pretty much the same as glass packs. Soooo.. i was kinda nervous.
Its just got a 350, with mild cam, trickflow heads, msd ignition, 670 holley carb, full length headers, 350 trans, corporate rear with 4:56. -electric fan set up. I still have to work with the carb even, its got a slight hesitation when you stomp on it. I havent wanted to tune it till i get my new rockers on there. next upgrade is 1.5 roller rockers. Im hoping that will wake this cam up a little more.

How tall are your tires? With 4.56s,what rpm were you turning @60 in 2nd gear?A mild cam should kick in way before 3 grand.are you sure your cam is mild?

Re: beat a turbo saub yesterday
Yeah! Show those import guys! I wonder what year and model the Saab was/is.I've never driven a Saab other than mine so I don't know how the bigger engine/turbo combos do.Mine, with the 175 hp 4 cylinder 2.0 and small turbo is pretty dead off the line but really wakes up in third gear after 45 mph.My car is more quick than fast-the turbo spools fast so it has good response at hwy speed. It has the sport suspension and the handling/steering/braking/are awesome. It's not so good on the takeoff though.A BSR tune will make these cars deadly but I see no reason to spend the $.I must say, I can live with the fuel economy.I averaged over 33 mpg on a trip to the UP of MI last summer.
So,what am I saying?......Keep your old truck!!These cars cost an arm and a leg to work on.Stupid electronics. And there's just something about driving our trucks that a car doesn't have.Glad you beat him

Its not the cam so much, its just with the hesitation and my current set up.... my truck doesnt wake up till im up there in rpms.... this was way over the speed limit btw... So i was pretty nervous and i dont even know what rpms i was at. I was mainly looking for cops and keeping the truck straight.

Re: beat a turbo saub yesterday
Never underestimate the power of a 3/4 ton! When I drove the '70 in high school I'd race it all the time, only won a handfull of times but it was fun. It had true duals with 18" glasspacks 45'd behind the tires, really sounded good and still does. Nobody really expected an old rusty 3/4 ton farm truck to be much of a challenge.

Re: beat a turbo saub yesterday
In high school in the late 90's I used to drag race my '74 Chevy K20 all the time. Had a 406 with dome pistons (9.5:1 compression), headers, mild cam and a Performer intake. With 4.10 gears it'd get off the line in a hurry and I beat quite a few people with it. Pissed off quite a few posers getting spanked by a rusty old beater. heh heh.
