Lower tailgate trim Q
I bought some woodgrain trim tape for my '72's tailgait trim( the trim is very strait and in GOOD shape except almost ALL of the woodgrain is gone). I took off the trim this eve. and found that the letters (CHEVROLET) are riveted on, I don't know why I thought the letters were attached with nuts or something like that?!!!!!!
How do I go about refinishing my trim? Is there a way to reattach the letters or should I buy new letters and just drill out the old letters? I'd rather NOT buy a new trim piece if I can avoid it. Mike

You can get a new set from Tim for $65 or so or you can drill out the old ones . I did this on a buddies by drilling only enough to get them out and then used steel epoxy to put them back on . Working good so far.

Does anyone know if the new letters attach the same way as the originals?
If so, It looks like you would use a punch from the backside and flare the letter post out? Mike

They have posts on each letter that a slide nut pushes on--easy to do.

I took off the trim and cleaned the piece up this weekend. I drilled out the old letters(over 1/2 were real pitted so I am going to buy new replacements). I found a heat gun and razor scraper worked best for the majority of the old adhesive. I then put one of those orange based hand cleaners with pumice on the remaining adhesive, covered it with wax paper and let it set for an hour or so, and then used a scraper, worked real well.
Now it's time for the new woodgrain I bought from Chevy Duty. I ordered 7' worth just to have a little extra.........well I got about 1/2 of it down real solidly and discovered that they only sent 5'!!!!! Well the trim piece is 5' 6 1/2"....Da*n. Well I guess I'll find out how good their customer service is. MIke
