Bought a 1970 GMC suburban 4wd for $300 yesterday.

Hey guys, Ive been around a while but never had much time to post. Yesterday I bought a 1970 GMC factory 4wd suburban minus the motor for $300. Thats almost free around here considering it has a lot of useable parts. I got lucky and was the first person to actually show up to look at it. Some guy from New Jersey flaked twice and never sent the money so they resold it.
It was a factory 350 v8, tailgate with the lift up hatch with an auto trans/ 205 t.case. It also had roof mounted a.c, power steering and I think power brakes. It now has a disk brake front differential in it but other than that its pretty original. I forgot to look at the options on the glove box so im not sure what else it came with. I havent got it home to thoroughly look at it yet so Im not sure of the extent of the rust but it was something I couldnt pass up. The front clip is almost perfect except the bumper which is the main reason I got it. I have a few questions I was hoping somebody could help me with.
First, how common is a 70 gmc 4wd suburban? Few and far between around here. I planned on stripping it but dont want to cut something up that was worth saving.
Second, are all the models with windows called suburbans, gmc and chevrolet. The old guy I bought it from insisted it was a gmc wagon. Sounded kinda funny to me.
Any help would be much appreciated. This thing will have to be gone or parted out quickly due to my limited space. I have five other projects in various conditions strung out between mine, my parents and two friends places. No room for more vehicles. (does that make me a pack rat) LOL. Thanks in advance for any help.

I will keep that in mind AzDon. The window is missing in it though. The guy said it was plexiglass before it got broke. Were they plastic or glass from the factory? I wont be keeping any suburban specific parts from it or the 71 I stripped. I have 3 trucks. Sucks when you have good parts like doors but they wont fit trucks.

One post on this website said that GMC production #s were lost in a fire, ... but I bet the total is less than the Chevrolets produced in 1970....

good buy on the sub, life is good, kent

I would be interested on the hatch also, if in decent shape? Sounds like a good buy...they are getting chep...very cheap....almost scares me to put alot of cash in mine? I have bought two in the last month for $150.00, I guess I will have to start stacking them like cord wood...LOL

I wish they were getting cheaper around here. Nothing is usually cheaper than $500 up here in far Northern California, and most everything for sale is 1976 and newer. Good old california smog laws. Everything 1975 and older has no smog so they jack the price up. I got lucky that nobody wanted to drive 20 miles in the middle of nowhere even to look at it.

no asking for parts.
The thread was started for asking about the truck... not for parting the truck out.
If you name is in pink, you shouldn't be asking for parts at all. Go to the parts forum and search for the part you need, or, become a subscribing member and then you can ask for the parts... but even then, only on the parts board.

Without the window? NO PROBLEM! If it's structurally sound around the hinges, I'm interested!

Re: Bought a 1970 GMC suburban 4wd for $300 yesterday.

I just got back from hauling it to my grandmas property. I will try to post something on the parts board soon so you guys can ask about stuff. Dont want to create problems in the wrong forum. It is fairly rusty in the bottoms of all rockers and quarters so I wont be saving it as a complete burb, parts only. It had a long list on the option sheet on glove box.
I just lost my job and my new truck is getting turned back to the loan company so I have 5 days to get either of my 4wd's on the road or Im riding my bicycle. Im in a real bad spot on time getting stuff together and reliable for a daily driver so bear with me. I wont have much time to post on the parts forum until I have a vehicle to drive but I will do what I can. I will try to post some pics so you guys can check out this cool old burb, but I havent posted pics in forums so I dont know how difficult it is. I might put some in my photo album since its easier from what Ive done so check my profile if you like. I dont want to keep rambling on so you guys just keep checking and hound me to get my but in gear. LOL. I will be out elbows deep in trans/t.case swapping cussing and screaming until Im driving one of them. Catch you later!!

Re: Bought a 1970 GMC suburban 4wd for $300 yesterday.

Okay(?) I went to XIV in the rules and it outlaws multiple posting (?) so I guess I'm sorry I posted my query twice! I looked at the entire thread before posting the second time and I don't believe the warning was there yet or I would not have posted again.
I read the rules change note from Josh, and it states that a subscribed member can offer parts for sale, available even to mere members! When 71 Stroker stated that "This thing will have to be gone or parted out quickly due to my limited space" I believed that he was offering parts within the rules and I was replying to his offer.... Does this mean that a mere "member" is not allowed to reply to offers to sell stuff? A little clarity on this subject would be nice so that mere "members" don't hafta feel like they are prohibited from buying stuff that is offered for sale by supporting members. It's not as if I posted a "parts wanted" ad (is it?)
Can I contact sellers by PM or is that prohibited?
I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just trying to understand what the rules are and was on the verge of subscribing before being notified that I'm eligible to be banned

Re: Bought a 1970 GMC suburban 4wd for $300 yesterday.

AzDon, just a little misunderstanding, nobody can post want to sell or want to buy or offer either way in a discussion forum. Only in the parts forum. I did sound like I was offering parts for sale, but I wasnt because I already knew I couldnt, but I apologize for the misunderstanding. I was just letting everyone know what I planned on doing with it. I will for sure be a little more careful how I word stuff just so new members dont get confused if they dont understand. Hope this makes it a little clearer and if anyone has anything to correct me on or add by all means lets hear it.

Its still around. I didnt have to get rid of it like I thought. My grandmas property didnt sell so it didnt have to remove it. I have a guy locally that might want the frame to convert his to a 4wd. Its been stripped of a lot of parts but its still a rolling body and frame.
