Wheel solution

I was previously asking about Chrome Smoothies, but now Im thinking I can improve the look of the wheels by painting the white rims black... and returning the hub caps to chrome. Do you guys think the caps can be rechromed or stripped of that ugly blue paint? (photo below) Thanks

Re: Wheel solution

Is there chrome under the paint? If so careful stripping might clean up nice. I suspect chroming them would cost as much or more than getting a chrome set of ebay, seems to be lots of them on there lately. I am looking for some67-72 4wd dog dishs for mine.

Re: Wheel solution

IMO it looks petty good as it is.
The caps should be able to be re-chromed, but it might cost just as much as buying different caps.

Yeah, i think it might be worth buying new ones on ebay, They're only $100 + shipping.

So that solves the hubcaps, how can i get the white paint off of the rims? Can that be blasted with a pressure washer down to the steel and then re-painted with a couple of coats?

Re: Wheel solution

What about just buying repro chrome baby moons and rings for it and leave the wheels white?

http://www.classicparts.com/1947-53-...ctinfo/64-019/

Thats what I bought for my truck and I am happy with the quality.

Oh... I believe i want them just like yours. The white on the rims should never have happened in my opinion. I think visually it makes the truck more blue.

I think Ill try to pull off the White with the paint remover, then maybe repaint black and buy the repro hub caps.

So what kind of black paint should i buy to paint the rims? Thanks

Re: Wheel solution

If the paint on the wheels is in good shape, Scuff them up and paint over top of the white. Scratch one of the hubcaps on the underside or edge to see if they were originally chrome. If so use that aircraft stripper that was mentioned in a previous post,Steve

The previous paint job on the rims was really bad... lots of paint was allowed to run down into the rims, so it should be stripped. What kind of paint do i buy and in what quantity? Thanks

Re: Wheel solution

I had mine sand blasted when my tires were dismounted. It was 30 bucks to do all of them. Then I powder coated the rims. Some shops will sand blast with the tires still on the wheel so that might work for you too. If you don't powder coat, go with a good quality spray paint like rustoleum. 2-3 cans should be enough. Like any paint job though, it will only look as good as what's underneath.

Re: Wheel solution

I would go with whatever sheen matches the paint on the rest of your truck- so probably gloss black.

Re: Wheel solution

I think you should paint the rims blue to match, THEN go with stepped beauty rings and chrome smoothies. Just my $.02

So in my hometown area, what kind of businesses do i contact to inquire about sandblasting? I guess i would have no idea what kind of business would have that kind of machinery ready to go... Other than googling "industrial sandblasting", where do i look? Thanks again

Re: Wheel solution

check body shops, machine shops, remanufacture shops. those places usually have a sand blaster.

Re: Wheel solution

My powder coating guy does sand and plastic media blasting. There is also a guy who is in the wood sign business who does sandblasting on the side. Try the yellow pages for a source.

OK guys I found my sand-blaster who will do them for $10 each (both sides) with the tire on.

Now i need to be thinking of what my painting steps will be. After the sandblasting, should i just tape the tires off and go get some spray paint cans of Rustoleum Gloss Black and coat each side of the rim? How many coats? How long to let them dry? Does that sound right to you all? Thanks

Re: Wheel solution

With the tires on??? Personally, I would do it right. Take off the tires and then have them blasted, use a good epoxy primer, and then if you are gonna spray bomb them, use several light even coats of color.
