9 inch swap
How hard would it be to swap in a 9in rearend for my 75 half 2 wheel drive? I would like to be able to swap gears fairly easy. thanks.

Pretty easy if you get the right rear axle . Search the internet and you will find that some Ford big cars came with a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern and are almost the exact same width as our trucks . They can even be had with factory rear disc brakes and the 5 on 5 bolt pattern .You would only need to trim the existing mounts and weld on a pair of universal mounts that can be bought at retailers like Summit . I see them on the internet at times and the rears that will work in our trucks are not that expensive . Most have serious highway gear since they were used in the big luxury cars but that is easily cured .

I know the ford 9in is common unlike some of the 12 bolts. I like the idea of being able to swap the pumpkin so easy. I just had my 12 bolt posi rebuilt and set up for my chevelle and now im stuck with the gear i chose. With the truck i want the option to tow or cruise. Probably use bags all around and i have a 454 to swap in place of the 350. Also ford has a wide selection of gears for the 9in.

so, it will still take you 2+hrs to swap, and 3-4qrt of oil, because who is cheap/dumb enough to reuse oil.
you will be ahead if you just bought an entire second axle and setup matching disc brakes. just take the calipers off, then dshaft, shocks, ubolts. clean and no waste. no need to bleed the brakes, reseal or refill. |

i had a ford 9 inch an broke both axles in it pulling of from stop lights . an no i was not spinning or anything just eased out on the clutch an bam .they kept snapping at the wheel bearing where it bolts to the axle tubes . by the way all the truck had in it for motor was a 300 6. so be carefull what axles you get the more splines thhe better

79 f-150 housings are about a inch wider. Come with big 3 1/4 axle tube and the heavy duty center sections. And the drive shaft needs to be a bit longer also. And you to fab the brake lines fords brake lines come down the left side of the frame.

No, the bolt pattern is wrong, but all you would have to do to remedy this is to pull the axles (which you would have to do anyway to install the gear choice that you want) and have them and the drums drilled to the appropriate 5x5 bolt pattern. They would just drill the appropriate pattern between the existing pattern. And yes, this would be plenty strong...and I have never heard of a 300 straight six breaking a 9" axle...EVER.

I bought moser axles. Ordered them 5x5 and took a die grinder to the drum's, they register on the axle flange...
