short water pump and a 305

I've got the new motor bolted in for my turbo project and I went to go bolt up the water pump but it won't fit. The truck is a 72 with power steering, previously had a 350 with a short water pump. The 305 i put in wont allow me to bolt up the short pump because the tube thingy on the timing tab hits the back of the pump, and the pulleys aren't even close to lining up. So I put the long water pump on and the pulleys for the power steering don't look like they line up. I currently have the crank pulley off the old 350 installed and that of course won't line up(i threw out the 305 crank pulley, doh!) so I have to get a 305 one. I have done a search, but of course if I put in 305, it omits it. All that i have come up with is to change the power steering pump to a newer style one. Is this all that can be done to fix it? I just figured out that my turbo headers don't fit the truck so I have some fab time coming up and would really like something to bolt in for once. Thanks, Dave

Re: short water pump and a 305

couldn't you use the timing cover off the older 350 ? then everything else should bolt up .

Re: short water pump and a 305

I had a similar problem. Started out swapping a metric 305 for an old style 350...and the problems started with the brackets...and the pullies...and the PS pump.

I wound up swapping all the 80's stuff (brackets, pullies, o-ring ps pump vs flange style) out for 70's stuff to put my truck right, including a new set of March pullies and brackets.

If you problem is just the p/s...I think you can just change out the fittings on the back of the p/s pump, or use adapters on the p/s box if needed.

Then the problem comes in, that the fan is WAY too far in the shroud (see above photo)

Re: short water pump and a 305

According to the numbers it's a 78 305. The balancer is much fatter than the 350 that came out. The backplate of the waterpump touches the timing cover, TRUCKDUDE239 perhaps someone had already swapped timing covers and balancers for you. When I went to try the short pump I also had the pulley on it and the groves were in line with the balancer so I knew that was wrong. The good news is that I did find the crank pulley I thought I tossed, so I think I'll just change the p/s pump.
LONGHORNMAN, I was wondering if that would be a problem. On my big block I couldn't run a clutch fan because I ran a long pump.
Thanks for the help guys, I'm a recovering big block guy just trying to stay away from the gas pumps. I really thought all small block stuff interchanged easily.
