Flat Bed spare tire

I'm looking for ideas regarding spare tire stowage on, or under my flatbed. Any pictures, locations, or designs would be appreciated. I really don't want to take up space on top of the bed. I'm leaning toward a tractor-trailer type carrier that mounts under the bed. I may have to buy a used unit then cut it down & reweld it to fit my 16" tire. There's a lot of really neat designs out there if you do a google, but as I say the tractor trailer design seems to be the most logical. What are you carrying under your bed?

Re: Flat Bed spare tire

Why not just use an original under-bed spare tire carrier? I'm sure the normal used parts guys on the parts boards have tons of them taking up space in their sheds.

Thanks guys, but I don't think the factory bracket will mount under my bed. I've checked that already. I will go out & double check.

Re: Flat Bed spare tire

A 16" wheel with normal height tire will stow just fine under 1 ton and 3/4 ton models. Have installed a couple of used OE spare tire racks (cross bars) and also have rigged my own stowage under there.

Side stowage, like on a big trailer, is an interesting idea for a flat bed, and I would like to see such an example. Right now, and until I get it installed underneath, my flat bed spare rides on the front of the deck cabled to the headache rack.

If you drive in a lot of wet/mud/snow/salt and the spare will be under there for long periods, it may be worthwhile to securely wrap it with some tough plastic sheeting to protect from corrosion and accumulation of crud.

Good luck. CCCC

Re: Flat Bed spare tire

Thanks CCCC; That's very encouraging. I really am considering that trailer tire holder. I always tend to gravitate toward the "different" fabrications & designs. Y'know; not the same old thing. I'm going to check out some large truck junkyards just to see if this is possible, and how much for a spare tire holder. Thanks again............

I like the late model Idea and would have suggested it.They are easier to get the spare out than the old crossbar type and you dont have to lay in the mud.

The factory bracket runs thru the top and bottom lip of the drivers side frame rail. If you don't have enough room between the upper part of the frame rail you could just bolt the spare carrier to the bottom, and use a couple od larger washers and a jamb nut to keep it secured.
