Newbie with a 72 c10

I thought I would share my progress with the truck I just got two weeks ago. 1750 bucks from the son of the origional owner. all the paperwork/protecta plate and the origional key on the origional dealers FOB. Got origional vehicle registration.

very orgional with 88172 miles. its very origional under the hood with origional hosed,clamps wires, stickers. The clutch is bad and has been replaced at least once before. the last time i dont think he resurfaced the fly wheel. I replaced the 11 inch clutch and pressure plate, resurfaced the fly wheel and replaced the freez plugs behind the fly wheel. I replaced the rubber transmission mounts as well.

The rear axle cross bar is bent and the rear springs are shot. new shocks,springs, cross bar and carrier bearing and motor mounts to be installed next.

I'm also trying to sort out the PS/Alternator and brackets cituation. lookin for hub caps

When you say the rear axle cross bar....what do u mean?

tracking bar? Ordered one up. Got cab mounts and a few manuals on order.

Installed the transmission

put new rear seal in transmission

new carrier barring, does anybody know why those "dust shields" are especially critical during very cold weather. (POP QUIZ)

Seen that rod called a few things some unprintable New one with bushings fo 50 bucks from LMC.

I just got my service manual and the assembly manual. Vital though flawed that they have become. (POP Quiz) did anybody notice the drawings of the pontiac v8 in the assembly manual. Its not an older GMC so it must be Canadian!(sorry).

New springs, shocks and that tracking bar and maybe front motor mounts and the rear end flush.

Also recieved cab mounts and radiator core support kits . that'll be half a day all by its self!

Stay tuned. Speaking of which I also got the usual tune up set too!Cap,rotor,wires plugs,points filters and oil. I opened up the box with the points in it and bothe me and the counter guy laughed at the same time. I said I never seen points set or even set point igntion up since like 1984. Full circle.Kinda nice to be home again

I just wanted to share something with the class. in the above picture of the bent bar, if you look at the muffler clamp below and to the left. That clamp and the rest of the exhuaste system is all origional. There are two or three of those clamps and man do they hurt

latest progress: new tracking arm installed, new springs installed, new shocks installed, flushed out the rear end.

11:41 gear set is about a 3.73 open rear

Pulled the springs out and found the tag you see attached to one of them

Origional shocks on this one. These shocks are origional ac/delco. shocks dont have a date like castings do. Example G-18-71 would be august 18 1971 on a casting some even narrow it down to day shift and night shift, others go further still and have a little clock......anyway. on shocks you have a Julian Date. That there are 365 days in a year and the julian dat starts at 1(jan 1st) and ends at 365 (Dec 31st)

so whats the point...the date on my shocks, the rear ones anyway are 258-70. the shocks were manufactured almost a full year before the truck came down the assembly line!!! all the other dates so far encountered fall between the middle of july of 71 and the middle of august of 71. the door sticker states my truck was made in 8-71 and sold in the third week of sept of 71.

Tommarrow my goal is to fill the rear and tranny with lube, replace the front shocks, lube the front end. install new hoses and filters. and as part of insatlling new cab mounts I will be pulling the seat and will be looking for the build sheet.

it runs greate. I got to figure out the power steering and alternator brackets and pulley deal. Bought two brackets for PS from a vendor. not even close. really struggling with this as I want it to be correct and not some mish mash junk, and no chrome under the hood.

here are some pictures. there are some others posted throughout the web site but here are these. I love it because it is the basic, essential and simple truck. GM pretty much got it right this time although I would like to have a talk with the engineer who aproved the bell housing dust shield ordeal....Its a .5 ton base model307/3 speed/373 gears, PS/PDB She is as solid as any Truck I have driven. it is a perposeful machine with no pretentions.1750 bucks of the son of the origional owner. lots of paper too. When I climbed behind the wheel It spoke to me. cant explain it but it was just one of those things. inexplicable.
