Wipers

So ive tried to use my wipers and here is what happens.... When i engage the switch to the left to turn on the wipers move up and stay there. Then after waiting a long time without any change, I turn the switch to the right and the wipers go back down to the off position.

Ive put clamps on the hose connections, so the seals are tight.

Is there an issue with the wiper motor do you think?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Wipers

I found this thread over at stovebolt.com on "wiper woes" and fixes. I fought that for years on my 59 then coverted to electric. This upgrade I am adding a delay function. http://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/...=468045&page=1 Using the search function there for "wiper rebuild" turns up a bunch of threads, this one seemed the most comprehensive.

Re: Wipers

had the same problem using a v8 to create the vacuum. not enough!. went electric and never looked back. believe me i lived in oregon and drove in the rain for many years with the vacuum set up. go electric if you need to use your wipers you won't regret the decision

Re: Wipers

Going to electric wiper motors is one of the best upgrades that you can make. Not that expensive either.

Does anybody have any experience with this guy who rebuilds the wiper motor?

Do you all think having the motor rebuilt may solve the problem? Thanks

Re: Wipers

link does not give the guys name so hard to say. The stovebolt guys have a guy they like, look in the tech section over there and search for wiper threads.

Re: Wipers

I have another wiper question... my wiper blades are old and cracked and need to be replaced. I measured their length and they're both 11.5" long.

But LMC sells replacements at 9" and 10" long. What should I do?

Thanks

Re: Wipers

I came across this while looking for something else and scanned it since I will need it eventually too. It lists the original Trico and Anso numbers. I have had good luck using NAPA to get blade refills for mine, recently for my 64 Chevelle.

OK great! I cant tell what the numbers represent cause the margins are cut off. What size does this document say my 51 Chevy will need? Thanks

Re: Wipers

here they are for all years. this came out of the master accessory manual on the Old Car Manual Project site.

arm
47-53 10" gm 3683905
54-55 1st 11.25" trico gm 3733355
55-57 12" trico gm 3733356
55-57 12" anco gm 3721849

insert blade
54-55 1st 11.25" gm 561268
55-57 12" trico gm 566510
54-55 1st anco gm 3749182
56-57 12" anco gm 3749183

I assume 58-59 is same as 55-57 above.

Does it say anything about an insert blade for the 1951? Thanks

Re: Wipers

No, and I checked Napa online and all they show is 11" complete blade. I'll stop on the way home and see it the local counter guru can find something. The number crosses for most gm cars too for that year so its not like there isn't a market for them!

Re: Wipers

I went to NAPA this weekend to look at some guages. While there I had him check on wipers in the 10, 11, 11.5 & 12 inch range. All he had was 12" in a full blade, not just the refill. It is silver metal color. PN 60-1233. Cost is 12.29. Looking at the blade part is looks like it could be cut down to a smaller size, it has a solid metal reinforcement strip. Here is a link to a picture. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Det...233_0121960438 Maybe this will help. Will the extra 1/2 make a difference in the operation (hitting the window trim or metal??)

Re: Wipers

I read somewhere on this site one time about using a rear Blazer wiper motor on my 48. So this weekend I got one off of a 93 Blazer. Made a mounting bracket and mounted it on top of the brace behind the gauges. Even used the two holes that were already in the brace apparently from the factory to mount the fabbed mounting plate, made a arm with the two studs similar to the original, messed around with it a bit and Whala, electric wipers for $20.00. I am going to try to take some pictures of the process and post in a day or two. Good luck

Re: Wipers

I used a 65 chevy truck wiper motor and fabbed a bracket my first go around. I later found a 59 GMC old power co. truck that still had the factory motor and snagged that. Biggest challenge with the first one was modifying the arms from the motor to the pivot.

Re: Wipers

I did go out and take a couple of pictures of the mock up. Still need to trim the bracket and a couple other things but so far everything works well. I will try to take some better pictures of it all disassembled in a few days.

So, in the first picture is the dash with the brace that goes from the dash to the fire wall. Mine had a couple of holes already drilled in the brace.

I held the rear wiper motor from a 93 S10 Blazer up above the brace and it looked pretty good. So I took the front mounting bracket off of the wiper motor, built a bracket that basically bends at about a 80-90 degree angle and then marked through the holes in the original brace. The other pictures show it mounted.

Then, I cut the end off of the wiper blade so I could use the knurled end to mount a piece built similar to the actuator on the original vacuum motor. I would suggest you slot the actuator piece so you can adjust the bolts in and out to get the correct stroke. Then put bushings on the bolt to match the wiper arms, make some adjustments and it seems to work pretty well. I did put rubber washers under all of the mounting points including the brace so it would be quite. It does not make as much noise as the wiper motor in my 08 Impala.

I am going to take it all back off and trim and clean up the bracket and fine tune everything, but so far seems to work very well.

Re: Wipers

Here's mine. An S-10 Blazer rear window wiper motor. Here's the basic, bare metal bracket. It's .125" cold rolled flat stock that's been laser cut and bent. Here it is put together . I made my setup work with the factory rubber mounts. I need to finish fabbing the linkage piece (I'd already made a prototype, it's just a bit rough for my taste) that mounts to the motor. I got a good laugh seeing "Buildinga55" thought the same way I did! I'm still not sure what the trick is to making the high and low speed work on this thing either. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=320546 Here's the pivot bracket and it welded to the locking collar I tacked the bracket onto the collar with my MIG welder. On the ones that go out, they will be TIG'd. Here it is on the motor.
