Ticking Wheel

My front passenger side wheel is ticking. I figure it's a bearing problem, but I don't really have time to do the brakes/bearings this weekend, and I need the truck to haul some lumber for a fence. Am I going to cause any catastrophic damage if I drive the truck about 100 miles this weekend? I don't know much about bearings and whatnot.

Re: Ticking Wheel

If it is a bearing then you could have some real problems very shortly.

Do you have trim rings on your wheels? They can cause a tick.

Re: Ticking Wheel

If you just noticed it started making the noise it should good for a few more careful miles. But,you didn`t hear that from me.I ain`t recommending squat.
Take the time to jack the wheel up to check for wear or slop. Also, listen to and watch it spin. Then decide.

Re: Ticking Wheel

Most of the time I have had a ticking noise it was as foreign object. Does it tick only on pavement or all the time? Either a rock or nail/bolt in the tread will cause this too.

Re: Ticking Wheel

Yeah, I was thinking there may be something in there, but I checked the tire, and it only ticks when it's on the ground. When it's up in the air, it is quiet. It's okay, though, brakes/rotors/bearings are getting done tomorrow after all. . .

that's what I was thinking too! I have an explorer with aggressive tires and live on a gravel road so this happens all the time to me....once you get up to about 60 it's usually out!

Re: Ticking Wheel

Well, we'll see. Tomorrow's brake/bearing day. Anything that I should know in order to make this go smoothly??? Specifically any tips for packing the bearings with grease? Just grease 'em up and pack 'em in?

Thumbs up Re: Ticking Wheel

Don't just wipe grease on the bearings and put them in. You have to work the grease into the bearings. Put some grease in the palm of one hand, take the bearing in the other hand, and with the large side towards the grease, just tap the bearing into the grease in your hand. After a bit, you'll notice the grease start appearing at the
top, small, side of the bearing. After you've done that all the way around the bearing, THEN you wipe some on the outside of the bearing, (now your bearing is packed), and put it in. Hope this helps?

Re: Ticking Wheel

The last time I had a ticking noise from a wheel it was coming from the loose center cap. Before that it was the busted joint on my right front axle in the 4x4 but that was a little more than a tick.

Re: Ticking Wheel

Alright. New bearings, rotors, and brake pads. The pads were so warn, that they were metal on metal in some places. Took her for a spin, and she stops. So, I couldn't ask for much more. Thanks everyone.
