What do you Think ??

I have a line on an original untouched 72 Burb with a small block, automatic and factory A/C. I am buying it from the Estate of the original owner. It has 175,000 miles but has maintenance records ( which I haven't seen) from day one including oil and filter changes every 3000 miles and for the last 10/15 years has only been driven short distances three or four times a year.

My question is... I live 1800 miles away do I fly there and drive it home
( when the weather is nicer) or trailer it home? If I did decide to drive I will put new tires on before I drove it home.

Re: What do you Think ??

1800miles....wow thats a long way! Personally I would drive if it were say 600-800miles away, but that seems a lot, but hey it would be a fun drive!

Get A AAA card and make it an adventure if you have the time. Shipping is cheaper safer and not as much fun!!

Re: What do you Think ??

To an extent the decision may depend on the ratio of your "want to enjoy driving the new truck" to your ability/willingness to deal with the potential troubles enroute In my case, have always driven them home as purchased (after a thorough pre-drive checkover).

Examples: 1972 GMC 3500 with big Lincoln Welder on the deck - almost 3,000 miles from NJ; 1969 C80 Fire Truck - 1,500 miles from Illinois (in a blizzard); 1969 C20 Longhorn - 1800 miles from Seattle; 1970 GMC 3500 - 800 miles from CA.

So far, so good - they all ran great the entire way. Our trucks are GOOD trucks. But, if you aren't knowledgeable/prepared to deal with the many potentials, or do not like new adventures in old trucks, shipping may bring you comfort.

Wow all those heavy duty trucks and no problems. I can do most small things on a vehicle so I'm noy woorried about that but blowing the trans or motor is a concern.

Chatting with my wife this afternoon she is up for flying down and driving it home and she has no mechanical knowledge at all.

Thanks for the tip. I have already thought of that possibility. I think I can get it shipped right to Saskatoon for a reasonable price but that wouldn't be much of an adventure now, would it ?

I don't really want to say at this time. When I have the deal secured I will tell all. Why do you want to know where its at?

I thought you already had the deal done. I was going to offer my help if it was close to me.

Re: What do you Think ??

I just last month bought a 68 4WD Suburban in Oregon, 2700 miles away from me, and I got it shipped/trucked to me for a very reasonable $1509.00 so I would say ship it and then take it for a more reasonable/safer trip once you get it home

Its in Los Gatos , I went and checked it out about 3 months ago when they where asking $2800 for it, then a couple of days later they had it up to $4500. I thought that was a big joke, I reviewed all the paperwork, noticed it had been in a couple of accidents repaired by Miracle and it shows. it would make a nice project Suburban because everything is there, just needs some love , The seats looked good they had them done. good luck with the new project . keep us posted

Yes that is the one. You know more about it than me. Why do you think no one would buy it for 2800.00, from your description it sounds like a righteous vehicle. What do you mean repaired by Miracle, is there someting wrong with Miracles work? I was gonna wire her the money and have it shipped to me here , but now I'm having second thoughts. I offerd her 3500. for it and she bumped me to 3700. and I said okay. I was thinking an original owner Burb with factory air and all the paperwork would be a good buy.

Thanks for the offer I really appreciate it and if I can ever help you up her please do not hesitate to ask. The numbers are crunched but I havent sent any money yet. I have bought a few motorcycles from the USA and have had them shipped to a warehouse in Minot N.D which is I believe closer to me than you are in South Dakota.

Re: What do you Think ??

Minot is way up there. I have been there once. It's probably a solid seven or eight hours from me. If you ever find a vehicle around here just holler. I looked at a nice low mileage pickup for a Canadian boardmember, it was an old member, GMcee or something with GM in it. He was the guy with the super rusty Blazer that he brought back to life with lots of new/donor metal.
If you ship it to South Dakota you can meet a bunch of boardmembers here, and then a few more on your way up to the border.
