Yeah, its a 4-speed OD. With the right bellhousing and input shaft it should work. Call Advanced Adapters after you get numbers off the tranny. Tell em the number, they should be able to hook you up, or know who can hook you up. No pun intended.

Yup, it'll bolt right on and use the same clutch as an SM465 equipped 6.2L would (factory trans used behind the diesels).

However, I doubt that one of those little A883s would be up to handling the torque generated by anything bigger than the 305 it was probably behind from the factory

I wouldn't be that quick to discount the A833 OD. They are pretty tough. When I was much younger I beat the hell out of one behind a built 383 in a rusted out '68 Fury. Chrysler put em behind 440s too.

The A833 countershafts can and do spin and wallow out the case behind the bellhousing. If it leaks oil from the countershaft bore you'll need to bore and bush the case.

Unfortunately, these are nothing like their older Chrysler counterparts. Those tough transmissions have a cast iron housing, and a totally different gearset inside which make them capable of standing up to the old 440s and such. The version GM used is really watered down, and is only rate for something like 275 ft lbs of torque IIRC

Here is some good info on them:

http://www.customclassictrucks.com/t...ion/index.html

I agree that it is a 4 speed, not a 5 speed.

Re: Will a 5 Speed that came in 81 fullsize Fit to a 6.2 Diesel?

I looked at a 82 1/2 ton 4x4 last year that had that trans behind a 6.2 from the factory. I was going to buy it and put another body on it because it had been rolled. The old guy who owned it had owned it since 1984 and said that truck would get 22mpg. I really wanted to buy it but he wanted WAY to much for a truck that was going to need a total body swap.

Re: Will a 5 Speed that came in 81 fullsize Fit to a 6.2 Diesel?

Found this on the net.
"The Overdrive four speed was a regular A-833 with an overdriven gear set installed in place of the regular third gear. The shift lever on the side cover was flipped over to "fool" the shifter into shifting from second to fourth and then back into third, which was the overdrive gear. The overdrive gear is very small and as a result, the mainshaft journal and splined hub is smaller. You can swap OD 833 parts as a set into the correct case for the mainshaft."

Re: Will a 5 Speed that came in 81 fullsize Fit to a 6.2 Diesel?

Rick, not to beat a dead horse, but I don't understand how it is a 5 speed?
First, second, third, and overdrive is 4 speeds, where does the fifth gear come in? Does it have a solenoid in the trans to engage overdrive?

Seems like this would be a cool trans in a daily driver for some decent mileage.....

Re: Will a 5 Speed that came in 81 fullsize Fit to a 6.2 Diesel?

its still a 4spd,

you have to flip a lever on the side cover, are you going to do that at speed?

when the lever is flipped it swap the shift pattern in a way that doesnt make sence but is not something that i would think is possible to do while driving.

Re: Will a 5 Speed that came in 81 fullsize Fit to a 6.2 Diesel?

either way, it does still have 5 forward gear speeds...

it's really starting to split hairs now...he only asked if it would fit behind a 6.2...that question has already been answered...

now it's just arguing to argue...I'm done with it...

Re: Will a 5 Speed that came in 81 fullsize Fit to a 6.2 Diesel?

I don't understand why everyone is getting bent out of shape?
Rick, I'm not doubting you, I'm just trying to understand how it has 5 speeds when the shifter knob, and the link posted with info about it, only shows 4 forward gears.

The text Fat Hoe quoted only describes how the shifter is set up to work, it doesn't explain how there are 5 forward gears....
It basically says that 3rd and 4th gear are flip flopped and what was 4th gear(1:1 ratio) becomes 3rd, and what was 3rd becomes OD(with a new gear set of .73:1)
