I have a 1/2 ton 64 GMC, and my friend recently swapped out the ring and pinion on his 1999 S10, I have 3.73 and his is a 3.08. I can have it for free, but would it work in my 64?

No, completely different rear end. Is your rear suspension leaf spring or coils?

It's leaf spring rear.

Then you most likely have a Dana 44 differential. Just so you know what you have when you look for gears. Does it look like this? This is a Dana 60 cover. The 44 looks the same just smaller.
