Heater Core Blues (Inner fender well)

Trying to lower the inner fender well as advised in an previous call for help to lower it for a heater core install and all of the nuts are just spinning after having to use a breaker bar and a lot of swearing to get them loose at all.
Any idea's?

Thanks
Steve

Re: Heater Core Blues (Inner fender well)

I just did that with mine. I had to use a grinder with a flapper wheel to get the inner fender out. I just ground off the bolt heads.

Vise grip the captive nut fasteners and wrench the bolts. PB Blaster works wonders too.

Re: Heater Core Blues (Inner fender well)

I had to remove my hood, passenger hood hinge/spring, and inner fender to gain access to the screws holding the heater box onto the firewall. But I also didn't have a swivel attachment for my ratchet. Maybe that would make it possible. Not sure though.

I did that for a little while but when I couldn't get a grip on the nuts I just got fed up and decided to grind the bolt heads off.

Re: Heater Core Blues (Inner fender well)

i drilled a hole big enough to get a tool through to get to the bottom bolts on the heater core box, had to wiggle a little to get out but it worked for me then rivited in two patches for the holes i drilled, i used a flexible socket extension to fit in the hole and to help manuveur, just my idea u may want to keep your fender unmolested so maybe not the idea for u

i did a heater core in my 68 two weeks ago - exactly this way... took off the passenger side hood hinge and spring - gave me just enough room to do the work

Re: Heater Core Blues (Inner fender well)

i did one on my 70 a few weeks back also. The way i did it was i just cut the box yes cut the box, made sure the core was stable enough, then just took a peice of tin metal, and fabbed it to the front where i cut it. looks real nice with the rest of the crome inside

My truck has the same modification courtesy of the PO!

It's actually a pretty clean way to do it. My PO cut it right down the axis of the holes for the heater core hoses. He did a really clean cut and then siliconed it up on reassembly. It probably seals better than leaving out the bottom bolt when reassembling...
