My 71 Cheyenne

For those of you that haven't followed my build thread, I've been working on this truck for a year and a half. I've done all the work my self including the paint witch I did in my garage. Today was a perfect day to take the truck out and shoot some pictures. It still needs some work, but I am really happy with the way it has turned out so far. Thought I would share.

Thanks. I remember the pictures from when you took your truck to the salt flats. Nice.
It's got a 350/350 combo. The motor is out of a 77 truck. Seems pretty stock. The front has 2 1/2'' drop spindles with a coil cut from the stock springs. The rear is bagged. The wheels are 18X8 245/45/18 front 20X8.5 MB Old Schools 275/45/20 rear.

When I bought the truck It was a total basket case. I've been working on cars & trucks for 20 years now, but this one has been the most challenging, but has helped me learn skills I can use in the future. My next project is going to have to be rust free.

It's pretty simple. Clean as well as you can. Sometimes I spay the floor down before I shoot. Most guy's use plastic to separate out an area which is a good idea, I don't use plastic. I put a box fan in my garage window, open the garage door of the house a few inches. Close all the windows in the house, and turn my swamp cooler on high. That will force all the air through the window in the garage. I have 6 2X4 lights on the ceiling and two single florecent lights on the walls. I carry a shop light on a cord to see anything below. I use base coat/clear coat. The base is a thin coat. When it comes to clear, it usually takes two or three thin coats, and then a last thick coat that will be like glass. That's were the light comes in. Look for the glare of the light off the paint that will help you tell when it goes to glass. This has taken me years to get good at and several attempts that had to be wet sanded or re-cleared, but this is the method that works for me.

i followed your build,turned out beautiful. I saw that you added a silver flake to the clear. Is the effect of the flake the same if you add it to the paint and not the clear?

Thanks. I drew that picture shortly after I bought the truck. The plan was to use the short bed frame, but I chickened out at first. It was right after Christmas that my work slowed down giving me time to build up the energy to just tear the truck down to the frame. I have always loved the two-tone paint schemes and dreamed of owning one some day.

Thank you. The silver is a Chrysler color (Sparkle silver). Whenever you mix a paint with another, the color will change. If you add the silver to the color you choose, it will pale the color, lighten the color. I add a small amount of silver, only for the large flake that is in it. Paint stores can mix metal flake in for you, but the color will change. I use 10 drops of silver to one mixing cup of clear. Its a very small amount, it can only be seen in the sun. I think it would be best to pick a pre-made color that already has the metal flake in it. I chose medium blue for the factory look, and decided later to add the silver to the clear. In case you ever have to match the color (at a later date) you want to keep the base coat the same you can always add silver flake to the clear to get the same effect as the metal flake in the paint.

Thank you all. It's been almost a year since I decided to swap the shortbed frame. Thinking back now how much work it was, I find myself with nothing to do and wish I had something to tear apart again.

I did take it for a drive last week in the snow and it was a lot of fun. I was the only one on the road and that made it better. I didn't build it to make it look pretty, I built it to drive around no matter what kind of weather.
