Re: under seat sub box up or down
It doesn't really matter. If you do face them down, I would recommend having 2" of space between the floor and the bottom of the box to move the air. Most people have them face up though.
Good Luck |

Re: under seat sub box up or down
It mostly depends on the style of music you listen to. If you primarily listen to rock, country, etc. then you should face them upwards for smooth response. If you are looking for hard hitting bass for R&B, Pop, etc. then the down firing position will be best. If you aim them upwards be sure to protect the speakers with grill plates, or your rear may bust them. If you choose to go with the down firing position the box should have 2” of clearance towards the rear and 2 ¾" at the front. The angle will result in better sound due to the fact that bass has a sound pattern that disperses across surfaces flat, so the angle will provide more efficient reflection. You will need to invest in sound deading material for your cab and doors for the best sound.

Re: under seat sub box up or down
2" is far more than neccesary to down fire them. 1/2"-3/4" is plenty.
I dont really agree with the above posters. Downfiring seems to provide a better all around low end sound in tight areas whereas upfiring them makes the stage seem "punchy". Of course, every system is different and things such as box construction play a huge factor. Try both and go with what you like better.

Re: under seat sub box up or down
I prefer down fire! Subs need a hard surface to resonate off of!

Re: under seat sub box up or down
I took my 10" custom fit down firing box out of my 98 after one day. I had a 12" in a behind the seat reg. cab box sitting around so I put that in facing up. It sticks out past the seat but it sounds 200% better.

Re: under seat sub box up or down
I don't know of any truck you can get 4 cubic feet under the seat.

Re: under seat sub box up or down
I put the subs facing up-and I'm very happy.I had a 72 blazer with a big box in the back and the base had a harder kick, but for what it is it sounds really nice.Between the subs and the bostons in the kicker panel It sounds mint.

Re: under seat sub box up or down
How much cu ft did you end up having in your sub boxes?
Like djracer said, I'm scratching my head trying to figure out a box. I am planning on removing the stock seat brackets and making my own that will give more clearance. I'm planning on the box on the driver's side to extend over to the passenger side, and then the passenger side box will extend up behind the seat where I have a little space beside the gas tank. I think I can barely sqeeze 2 cu ft out of them, but I don't know yet. It looks good on paper...but that's paper. So when you came on here and said that you are going to throw two 12" subwoofers under the seat like nobody's business and just wanted to know if they should be pointed up or down you became my instant hero. So how much space did you end up with in your boxes or or they like free air mounted or something? |

Re: under seat sub box up or down
I just built the biggest box I could fit under a stock height seat and divided it in half.I didn't get to technical. If the box is not big enough You can buy a filler (pillow stuffing)that tricks the speaker into thinking the box is bigger.Maybe in two weeks I'll have pics

Re: under seat sub box up or down
Heres a pic of mine, 2 10" Kicker CVT's DOWN firing....wouldnt have it any other way, and I listen to all types of music. And I know its a new body, but same thinking I would imagine...I would say 2' is just about right for spacing. Look at how a sound wave works and it will make more sense...just my .02

Re: under seat sub box up or down
That's just it pumpgas. No one "NO ONE"!! has ever made a box to fit under the bench seat of a 67-72 truck and fit two 12" woofers in it. You hear about it all over this site, but you will NEVER see a picture of one, because they do NOT exist. It's just a bunch of talk. Maybe a few small boxes with like one 8", but that is it. If I am wrong, then shoot me down... anybody... show me a picture and I'll eat crow. Anybody can stick a box under the back seat of a extended cab truck, but lets see a box under the bench seat of a 67-72 reg cab. I think that they are just a myth that is discussed on here, but never has been accomplished.
