Re: Buying a new grill was it Damaged or not???

If there is one thing I have learned building classic vehicles over the years. Always go to the parts warehouses and look before buying. I would never order a grille, tailgate, fender, hood, quarter panel, or door without inspecting before buying because of these nightmares. It doesn't suprise me that they won't take it back and replace it. Trevor

Trevor, not knocking you, but it is tough for some people to look at parts before buying. I believe you have a few places fairly close to you, correct? Of course if i could, i would go look with cash in hand... Good advice...

Trevor. The problem is in the packing in my case not with buying them and having them shipped or being damaged during shipping!!! I might not be in the car building business or have the many years of dealing with having classic car parts. But I am in the aircraft business and ship aluminum panels and peaces all the time with out any damage!!!

Whoa, not trying to discourage anyone, and I understand that I am rather lucky to live within a couple of hours from some parts places, but what I am saying is over the 10 or so years of being around classic automobiles, I have read many horror stories on sheetmetal. If you are within an hour or in my case, 2 hours away from part houses, it is well worth the drive to check out parts before buying, as sheetmetal is not easy to return because there are too many fingers pointing when something is damaged. I don't buy aftermarket sheetmetal though, so I have personally never dealt with any of them on anything except patch panels. Trevor

Oh, I believe you on the packaging, but you can't always knock that either. There are a lot of variables here. It comes down to some people not caring. Whether it is Chevy Duty (Classic Parts), their supplier, or the UPS man, someone was not doing their job. It's different then buying NOS stuff off of the board though. I have seen people make wooden crates for tailgates and grilles to protect them from being damaged. This sounds much like what you are talking about dealing with aviation parts. Some people take pride in knowing the job is done right. Sorry it happened to you, it's one of those chances though, as like I said, many part houses will not except returns on sheetmetal pieces or oversized shipped pieces after it leaves. Good luck with what you decide to do on your situation. I wasn't trying to be a smart-a** on my comment above, but just like I said, I have heard horror stories from this forum and other classic vehicle forums about sheetmetal and grille parts. By the way, your truck is coming along nicely. Trevor

The grill that I got was not a after market it was good old GM Because it has Chevrolet on it!!! Shipping sheet metal is not easy you have to pack it so the jack --- that is handing it don't mess it up.

Re: Buying a new grill was it Damaged or not???

I think there was a thread not to long ago that they said these weren't GM grilles. I think they said these were aftermarket grilles that were probably left over from the years when they could run Chevrolet on them. Somebody quote me if I am wrong. I do know one good way to identify the originals from the reproductions as it has to do with the pattern on the center bar. I really do feel your pain though as for many years I have ran on my truck a lack-luster scratched up grille. Always wanted a new reproduction or NOS one, but I know I wouldn't want one already beat up after spending the money. Trevor

Re: Buying a new grill was it Damaged or not???

GM must have changed their molds or it is just licensed from GM, because there is a difference in the 2 lines that run completely across the grill as on these it falls a couple inches short. I think too if I remember right, that Classic Parts was the only one carrying these grilles with the Chevrolet on them. Trevor

Hey Neil, how bad was it??? Was it dented up or just bent out of shape? or both? I seen your pic on your thread, but couldn't make out just how bad it was. If it was bent up, I could see ya being able to salvage it with just a little extra time. How's the body work coming? Trevor

Neil, so are you having them pick it up? If so, are they giving you a refund? How bad was your original?

Re: Buying a new grill was it Damaged or not???

I have had 2 complete grills shipped off this forum with no problem. Luckily........... I used to work at a body shop and 80% of the parts we got were damaged. So it is a crap shoot really. It has a lot to do with how the shipper handles it so make sure you put insurance on it and have all your stuff together in case you need it when you will file your claim.

I bought my NOS Grille off ebay about five years ago. Undamaged and now it sits proudly displayed on the Circuit Rider.
