Saginaw 4 speed Swap

I currently have a saginaw 3 speed on the column, and I plan on putting a rebuilt saginaw 4 speed in place of it. I know the cases are interchangeable, but I want a floor shifter. Anyone know which one works for our trucks? Thanks.

Re: Saginaw 4 speed Swap

My main concern is the shifter rod, the height and bend? Does anyone have any suggestions for this?

Re: Saginaw 4 speed Swap

I did mine back in 1980; at that time there was a specific Hurst (or Mr Gasket) application for a pickup truck with a bench seat.

I'd say check the parts books and see what you can find.

Good luck -

Figured it out, had to get the Hurst Indy universal 4 speed shifter, then a replacement shifter arm for a Hurst 3 speed truck shifter with a bench seat. Fits together perfect, don't have it in the truck yet but it looks like it will work perfect.

Glad to hear! my truck will be getting a 4 speed Saginaw later this winter. Did you buy a new one, or did you find a used one somewhere?

Re: Saginaw 4 speed Swap

You are correct the hurst shifter works fine. I did the swap a long time ago used a saginaw 4 speed from a car. Wasent to happy 1st gear was useless ended up going back the the 3 speed.

Re: Saginaw 4 speed Swap

What were your gear ratios? I have a 3.11 first gear saginaw, and I have 3.73's out back. I am going to redo the rearend pretty soon, and I was debating a 3.73 or a 3.42 for more street friendly driving, but since my main concern is acceleration I decided on the 3.73's, though I havent got the ring gear and pinion yet.
