Help with servicing the 4x4 in a 2004 Silverado

The service 4x4 message in my girlfriend's 2004 Silverado just came on. What is involved in servicing these truck's? I've never worked on this type of new truck so I'm not sure if it's something I can or should even try. Any advice would be welcomed.

Re: Help with servicing the 4x4 in a 2004 Silverado

i had a 2003 4x4 that the service x4 light would come on then would go off after a while. finally it stayed on so i took it to a dealer to scan. it was the shift incoder motor i believe. it cost me about $400 to have it fixed. they said they had to put the new shift motor in then reprogam it so i could not do it myself. i guess it is common on these trucks. good luck! i would say have it scanned.

The 4wd switch on the dash is also known to go bad (the connections get loose) and it throws that message. They sell them on ebay for $50-60 bucks.
