Late model mirrors on 55-59?
Has anyone looked at using the 2000 + model mirrors with heat, electric adjust, built-in turn signals, etc? I used to run the tripod type but want something a little nicer. Peep mirrors are just too small for the daily driver and keeping track of stuff off road. I am going to convert to one piece windows and trying to look ahead to what other fabrication I will need to do to the doors.

Never seen it done but boy it sounds great with the heat and built in signals especially.

Anything can be done. I think the biggest problem is finding ones that will fit the contour of the doors. The wiring shouldn't be to big a problem after that.

The PLASTIC ones? I like the idea of heated and (maybe) even the signals...I guess, but not the plastic on our classic trucks.

Re: Late model mirrors on 55-59?
I can figure out the wiring and toggle for the mirror operation. I don't know if the new ones are plastic or metal, really doesn't make a difference to me. This truck will be a driver and my goal has been to get all the conveniences of a new truck in the old shell. I drove it for the first 20 years as a minimal beater. If I can find a set of metal mirrors that will work that is fine. I do not want to use the tripod or original goose neck type. The contour and mounting footprint were the reason for the question. Looks like I need to make a template of the door/cowl and head to the wrecking yards.

I've seen some mid 90s van or 80s pick-up truck mirrors used on these trucks before and they looked pretty nice. You don't get all of the conveniences of the newer ones but, they are pretty functional.

Re: Late model mirrors on 55-59?
I've had them on my 48 since before Chevy offered them! I contacted the company that was making them for F**D, (KWMUTH) and told them I just couldn't put them on my GMC truck. So they made up some for me! I was told they then used my pics to solicit GM. This was about 12 years ago. They work great. I did a little cutting & filling to the top of the mounting side, then mounted them to a curved plate that I attached to the doorframe.

Re: Late model mirrors on 55-59?
I should have looked closer, I did notice them. Does the bracket float over the glass in the corner (welded to the dogleg frame)? Did you get the rear end sorted out? Thanks for the comment.

Bracket does float, I could get a pic if you want. & Yes, I broke an axle. Replaced the 57 f**d axles with billit. Should last another 52 years.

Re: Late model mirrors on 55-59?
No hurry, some pics would be great when you have the camera out someday. Glad it didn't hurt anything else inside the rear.
