Door handle issue

What's the fix if my button won't come back out on my exterior door handles? Sticks worse when the weather is cold. Tried lubricant around the button, no help. Is my problem actually at the latch? Tried lubricant there, too.

I would suspect a worn out spring, except I can't even pull the button back out with my fingers, it just has to gradually work its way back out, then I can close the door.

Re: Door handle issue

You might have to take it out to see what it is doing [spring binding, etc.]

Re: Door handle issue

Time for a new - or good used handle.

They are made of pot metal. There are little ears folded over from the backside to hold the thumb button in place. I pulled my handle when this happened to me and was able to fold over what was left of the pot metal ear but the fix was only temporary.

I later picked one up out of a junk yard and still use it to this day. [This was before this forum existed and used parts were still easy to find in yards]

Cruise over to the used parts forum and look for a used one to buy. I heard the re-pops aren't all that great.

If you roll the window down you should be able to see the back of the handle and the plunger inside the door. You might be able to tell if the button is coming apart or not. Anyway, try spraying some lube on the parts you can see down in there.

Re: Door handle issue

Sounds like the bent over tabs broke and dropped the guide plate for the pin on the back of your button. Time for a new one or used replacement. Also fish out the little plate thats sitting in the bottom of your door so you don't have to listen to it rattle or have it block the drains. New repops are like $50 for two. Get new gaskets also. Good luck. Jim.

Re: Door handle issue

I had the same problem, the pin in the back of my button was bent over and was letting the button go to far in and getting stuck. I took the handle off, straightened out the pin and filled the button with JB weld to keep the pin from bending again, it's been this way for 15 years now.

Re: Door handle issue

Just replaced mine today. If you were closer I'd say you can come and pick my old usable ones up. You can get a new set for about $50.00, which is what I did, and they are real easy to replace. Cnut

Thanks for the offer anyway. I'm going to have to order a bunch of front end parts after I wrecked my truck a couple weeks ago. I'll probably throw a re-pop set in with those.
