Re: got more go,,now need more whoa
what's the T5 behind?
I have a T5 behind a mild 350...I'm just waiting for the day it snaps. That's ok though, it was cheap. |

Re: got more go,,now need more whoa
drum brakes are a thing of the past my friend, installed 4 wheel disks on mine . master cyl. and front are from CCP and the back is from a rear end swap w/ a Trans/Am this also gave me a 5 lug pattern , its hard to find nice 6 lug rims. also went with front and rear sway bars when I did my drop kit ( all CPP) this handles like a new car and stops on a dime . instead of the front diving the whole truck does , well worth the money and gets rid of the old truck feel Eric

I always thought adding hydro-booster to an old, but properly maintained set of drum brakes would be killer. No need to change to 5 lug or anything else. Adding hydroboost isn't trivial but it would turn an drum brakes into something very nice.

If you really want to stay drum I am pretty sure that the wider drums and backin plates from a mid 70s 4X4 will fit but before you go buy it all check to see if the drums fit your wheels and if you can fit the backing plates on the front. I did a disc conversion on the truck in my avatar back in the early eighties cause drum brake and a 500 horse big block don't mix

Yes they will fit on any truck 12 bolt except for the '63's that had pressed on backing plates. With the 1/2" wider shoes this upgrade will give you better braking on the rear. I don't know if the backing plates could be made to work on the front or not.

I would also suggest upgrading to a power brake booster with a '67-'70 dual resevior master and acompaning metering valve. This can be done reasonably with off the shelf parts from your local auto parts store, or from a wrecking yard. There's absolutely no need to buy expensive aftermarket brake parts unless that is what you want. There's plenty of OEM parts that interchange.
