Big and littles tire size?
I have a good set of 275/60 15's for the rear of my 64 gmc shortbed, I am wanting to do the big and littles look for the tires. 15x7 aluminum slots. What tire size would work best for up front? any suggestions?

Re: Big and littles tire size?
The 275-60 is 28" tall. So something a little shorter w/o being too short would be a 215-70 @ 26.85", a 205-75 @ 27.1, or a 215-75-15 @ 27.7" tall. What width wheel do you plan for the rear?

Re: Big and littles tire size?
I would think a 7inch wheel would be too narrow for a 275/60 tire, I have a 235/75 on 8 inch rims on rear of my 64 stepside with a 205/75 on 6 inch rim on front.

Re: Big and littles tire size?
I'm planning on-
275/60 rear (~28 tall 10 wide) 235/60 front (~26 tall 9.5 wide) Tire rack list diam & width (and other stuff) if you click on 'specs' David |

Re: Big and littles tire size?
Thanks for the input, I was told the wheels were 15x7 all around when I nought them, I havent measured them though, they are all certainly sitting on 275/60s.

Re: Big and littles tire size?
Hey 250,
The minimum recommended rim width for a 275/60R15 is 7-1/2. An 8-9 would be better. 9-1/2 is the max recommended. (Tire and Rim Association standards) TR

Re: Big and littles tire size?
Here’s what 215/70-15's look like on 15x5 TTO rims:
And here’s what the same tires looked like previously on early Dragmaster 15x6" rims: If I had it to do over again, I’d run the 15x7 TTO’s (like what is on the back) all the way around with the 215/70 tires on the front. The extra width of the rim is almost all to the back (more backspacing), so the wheels wouldn’t stick out further, but the tires would look more stretched out over the rim (which I prefer). I can’t check right now but I think my rear tires (on the mags) are 255/60-15. |

Re: Big and littles tire size?
I have 8" rims all around on my '65 step side . I originally had 225/70/15's on the front and 275/60/15's on the back . When I recently replaced the tires , I switched to 255/70/15's on the rear for more clearance . It is a good combination .

Re: Big and littles tire size?
Here they are, the supposed 15x7 on the 275/60s. I'll double check next time I'm out in the garage.

Re: Big and littles tire size?
I used 8.5's with the 275/60R15's on my old '78.
In the picture, it looks like they could be 7's given the way the sidewall is pulled into the tire. Deffinately not recommended if they are 7's.

Re: Big and littles tire size?
Love the look of slots on these old trucks! Sweet!
Anything smaller than a 28 inch diameter tire in the front doesn't visually fill the wheel well opening up, IMHO. That was about what these trucks rolled out of the factory with. Your thread title is "big and littles" which is old school. Being an old fart I am qualified to state that old school also would dictate wider rims in the rear than in the front and rubber that shows a lot of sidewall. As a visual reference I am running 15 x 8-1/2's in the rear with 15 x 7's in the front. 235/75R15 front and 33x12.5R15 in the rear. I hope this helps you in making a decision. |
