starting issues
I have an automatic 4x4 1969 with a 350 that has trouble starting. The starter makes a horrific grinding noise when it is engaged. The flex plate is in decent shape and the starter is getting full voltage. I tried shimming it and had no luck. Any help appreciated.

How old is the starter? It can only be three things - the shims, the teeth on your flexplate, or your starter.

Some starters come with a roll pin that you can stick between the starter bendix and the flywheel ring gear when they mesh to see if you have the adequate clearance. I believe it is 1/16" or 1/8" in diameter. Maybe someone else knows which of the two it is. I had this issue with my 67 Camaro when I first got it and I shimmed it about 10 different ways and it made no difference. I had to replace the flywheel to fix the issue.

i'd bench check the starter to make sure it fully extends when energized

I had a similar problem and was thinking it was the starter the entire time. The starter would shift after 2-3 starts and then start grinding. It ended up that the starter needed bolts that the shaft was fatter than the threaded area. The only place I could find the bolts that would work were at a dealership. They were $3 total. Hope this helps.
