Front Drum Brakes.
Getting ready to do the front drum brakes on my '69 C-20, though I'm very tempted to just take it in. I hate doing drum brakes. The Chassis Service manual mentions a gasket between the drum and hub, any idea where to get this gasket, and what's it called?

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
bump.
Curious to know the answer to this, and what its function is. I've done a bazillion sets of rear brakes on everything from Corollas to school buses but never a pre-70s front drum vehicle (that I can recall anyway). No rear drum vehicle I ever did had a gasket between the drum and a hub.

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
Never had to do front drums either. Maybe somebody who knows will chime in.

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
Two wheel drive. I have the seals on order. The Chassis Service Manual mentions a gasket between drum and hub. I'd like to swap to disks, just not in the budget for now,

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
sure it is, find a beater 73+ for as dirt cheap as you can. most of the time you can get roller frames for free .
swap out the whole package, take the pos to the scraper, you brake job was now free. |

Will this work for a 3/4 ton?

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
R U talking about where the backing plate fits over the spindle? When I recently did the front drums on my '66 C10, I just ran a small bead of Permatex around it.

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
Supposed to be between the drum and hub. Might just hit it with RTV.

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
Good to know, although I just sprang for all new parts for the drum brakes, so it'll have to wait for a bit.

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
Nah, I'm just going to redo the drums and then hunt down the stuff to go to disc brakes in the future. Just don't have the time right now to find the parts and rip the truck apart. 3/4 ton drum brakes actually stop pretty well.

Re: Front Drum Brakes.
I've noticed this gasket you are talking about. I recently pulled a front hub (2 wd) off a GMC in the junk yard and noticed the remains of a gasket material between the hub and brake drum. There was not much left of it so I just scraped it off. Maybe it was for some kind of "anti chatter" fix for vibration or something?
