Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
Thanks .. It hasn't been on the salty roads of Iowa since 1979 I think that helped it out the most ..

Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
I miss being in Iowa. I was in the Ames area for the whole decade for school and then the wife's school. The older trucks were actually plentiful. Then this summer we moved up to Minnesota. Can't find a truck if your life depended on it. Lots of the 80s Chevys around that are rust buckets. I got mine from family hand-downs. Since then I have seen 1 restored during the summer, 1 drivable rust bucket, and 2 junkers.
A local dealership in Mankato has a 67 long wide bed for sale in the back of their lot for $1500. It has no seat cover anymore, the interior is needing full replacement. But apparently it drives, it has a "rebuilt 355 and tranny" according to the salesman, of course with the missing parts that are in the back end it isn't road legal either. Maybe the price will come down enough in the spring. Right now it's in a snow drift. |

Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
These are all within 3 miles of my house. Our town I think.....is about 5000 or so population wise. My 2 aren't in these pics and I'd bet that I could shoot another 50 real easy and not get over 20 miles away. Most of them are still driven.
Check out the hugger orange 4wd stepside, last time I looked, that truck had 42,000 original miles. The owner flies in to hunt birds for 2 weeks a year and the rest of the time it sits. V8,at,air. |

Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
I can account for almost 50 of them within a miles radius of me... I guess were are lucky here in the Northwest..
They grow on trees around here and are everywhere.. although I will admit alot of them are rusty.. |

Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
Theres a ton of them around me. My neighbor has a 72 Cheyenne super that he still drives everyday. He told me once he's had it since the mid 80's. Most of the ones I see are 2wd lwb, most are pretty rusty.

Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
It is interesting to note the model of pickup common to certain regions before internet cross country buying. Rural areas usually have more base model trucks for work, suburbs usually have more highly optioned models doubling for a second car. Big cities residents would have bought trucks primarily for commerical use. 4X4's for frequent heavy snow and off road working situations. Economics of course, but I am sure GM management knows exactly how many trucks and model types were sold in specific parts of the country. Survival rates will differ according to use and climates. I have noticed a high percentage of custom camper pickups originally are from the Pacific Northwest. I kind of figure many people who lived there tried to get away from their bad weather.

Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
I've been telling myself that I was going to ride around and take a bunch of photos of trucks that I see either sitting or driving but don't seem to have the time.
I saw a young cowgal pulling a horse trailer with one yesterday. A longbed that looked like it had spent it's life working hard but was well kept. The neighbor has one on his farm that he drove as a brand new truck and now it is used to carry fuel out to the tractors and hauls seed sometimes in the spring. That's a full pallet of wheat seed in the back plus the fuel tank and fuel in it. |

Re: Driving around spotting old chevys...
I just saw 3 more and I also saw a '54-'55 Chevy getting some gravel today. They are starting to pop up every time I go out.
