Ok, here is the story. I was looking for a 87-91 crew cab truck to replace my 04 crewcab, baby #3 is on the way and truck payment=daycare payment. I came across a 91 4x4 crew long dually with a whipple charged 454, 75k miles (35k on new crate motor). The truck is in great shape, the guy I bought it from was the original legit owner. When the truck was new on the lot, it was stolen, the guy had if for about a year, put all the stuff on it (running boards, pinstriping, shell, visor, etched windows). The PO bought it from an auction after it was recovered in '92, put the charger on it, and used it to pull an occasional trailer. My plans are to cut it down, put a short bed on it, lose the dually, lift it, put some bucket seats in it, paint it, and drive it. I have seen the other builds (I wish ojoe's had some more pics) and it has me excited to get my own going. Currently I am collecting parts before I get too crazy with the sawzall

I look forward to hearing some advice, tips, and some constructive criticism

I am continually impressed with the amount of knowledge and skill on this board, and hope i can be of some value.

Wow, nice truck as it sits. More pictures of it would be nice too.

But I say keep the dually and do your lift and stuff to it. That is one good looking truck.

That sounds like it is going to be sick. How big of lift and tires are you planning on?

keep the front dually, put srw hubs and disc on the back and run h1 rims.

srw front hubs are spendy and the srw rear hubs are easy to get. h1's can be had all day long for 40-60 each, plastic inserts are another 50, h1 37s are easy to get @less than 100 for 90%+ tread. you have a decent wearing, decent traction cheap tire with dual bead lock and its all easy to get.

I havent decided yet, 4 inch with 35's or 6 with 37's. I am leaning towards the 35's on 18x10 wheels though.

So, I came across an 88 suburban that I can damn near steal. Its a 1/2 ton 4x4 that i could use the axles off of for the cc. I kinda like the idea of putting the 1/2 ton axles, cuz I have a nice set of 20 inch Wheels/tires that i could run. Thoughts????

Aren't half ton axles a little weak for a 7k pound truck with a supercharged 454?

I wont be using the truck for off roading or anything, just a daily driver. Are those axles gonna be too weak?

If you are running 35's I say go for it. anything over and its not "if" its "when" they are going to break. IMO

the immediate plan is to run my existing wheel/tire,a 33 inch. after the tires wear out i would probably go bigger, but not larger than a 35.
