Side mount Gas tank door ????

I have side mount gas tank doors on my 72 LB, they are old and rusted. Is there a better way to have access to the tanks or different more custom looking doors that anyone has used?

Here's the one on my '72 GMC. The PO had it installed and said it was from a Pontiac Firebird. I don't know what year.

I like that Mike. That is exactly what I was thinking about doing on my 71. I'm more after convenience than smooth and slick or tricky as I use the truck for everything. I have the burb tank and need to get it done as I bought a camper shell for it and need to take out the big tank in the bed.

I like the looks of how that was done. It looks like it belongs there! I think that is the route I will go with mine . Now I need to find 2 of the same donor doors since I have a tank on both sides. Thanks

While on the subject, does anyone make replacement side tanks for the 67-72's? This seems to be almost a taboo subject. Were the tanks no good? Unsafe?

Re: Side mount Gas tank door ????

I thought I saw a post that gave a link to a company still mading side tanks for both sides. IIRC, they were not cheap, like $400-$500 each.

If you really want (or need) one, I have a driver side tank I removed from mine I would let go fairly cheap, if you want to drive down to San Diego to pick it up.

Re: Side mount Gas tank door ????

I already have the tanks installed on the truck ----see post #1. I want to replace the tank doors with something different than what I already have.

Re: Side mount Gas tank door ????

Sorry, I was replying to 69GMCLonghorn.

For me, I am going to use the stock area from a '67-'72 Suburban so it looks like it was factory.

On my last '68, I grafted in a door from a Buick. Went to the junkyard and looked around until I found something that looks good, cut it out, took it home and welded it in. This was pre digital camera days so no pics.
