Re: 292 Smog Pump Removal
The smog pump is a simple air-compressor. It injects a small amount of air into the exhaust port and tries to help burn residual fuel vapor. It uses very little belt power. Most people threw them in the garbage because they thought it significantly hurt performance. Not True! Keep it on there and happy driving!

Re: 292 Smog Pump Removal
The only one I ever removed was on my 1968 Camaro, in 1968. The only difference I noticed was it no longer 'sneezed' when shifting (with a cold engine).

Re: 292 Smog Pump Removal
The "Sneeze" is the little puff from the diverter valve when engine speed reduces rapidly (shifting). Automatic transmission vehicles will make the little sneeze noise if you let off the gas pedal quickly.

Re: 292 Smog Pump Removal
It will not improve performance but does clean up the engine compartment. Some of those 292's had such a mas of pumps & tubes it was practically impossible to work on.
