700R4 Crossmember: Will this one work?
Got my frame painted and while the cab is off I'm wanting to install a new crossmember for the 700r4. My truck had a old 3 speed manual on the column. I found this one:
http://www.resto-modtechnology.com/s...%7C-GMC/Detail If this will work, whats the easiest way to get this thing mounted properly? I can see myself mounting this thing and it being off 1/2" or so and really giving me he77!!! I have a 72', will there already be holes drilled? I'm off to do more searching. Thanks |

That looks like a nice piece. I'd say you will have to have the engine & tran. setting in the frame to get it lined up & then drill the holes. I supose you have removed the crossmember that went under the bell housing.

Re: 700R4 Crossmember: Will this one work?
putting engine and tranny in place would b best, you might b able to use existing mounting holes in the frame// yes the original bellhousing mount crossmember needs to go
i believe GMC paul's carries that type crossmember too,so check with him on pricing

Re: 700R4 Crossmember: Will this one work?
I installed a 700R4 in my 68 that was a Powerglide truck and just moved the existing cross member and drilled the appropriate holes. The one you showed looks good, or maybe you could find an original from someone on the forum.

Re: 700R4 Crossmember: Will this one work?
That's a nice looking piece - much beefier than the tubular ones you see that only bolt to the bottom of the frame. My '69 started with a powerglide, then a TH400, now a Tremec TKO - and I used the original crossmember. Lots of holes drilled! I would do a lot of measuring so you save yourself the trouble of having to re-drill holes, especially since you'll be drilling holes in the top and bottom of the frame.

Re: 700R4 Crossmember: Will this one work?
Thanks so much for the replies. Since the engine is not rebuilt, nor the 700r4 purchased, sounds like I might need to wait. Just seemed like something I needed to do now before the cab went on. But, I guess I'd rather wait then to have holes all in the frame.

If you want you can use this
Website and use the transmission mount measurement differences to figure where the crossmember needs to go. Personally I would wait and mark the holes with everything in place.
