Re: cutting patch panels at the pick a part

get you a torch with a cutting tip on it just cut the panels out larger then you need and move a little quick so you dont distort the panel with the heat, oxyacetylene torch takes no electricity..

Re: cutting patch panels at the pick a part

most junkyards around here dont allow anything that will make a spark, so if thats the case a cordless sawzall is best, or borrow a generator?

Re: cutting patch panels at the pick a part

our local pull-a-part doesn't allow cordless recip saws or drills. If you could use a drill a nibbler works quite well, but they are kinda spendy

Mine won't allow even a hack saw or tin snips in the door but I smuggle them in anyway because you never know when they will come in handy.

Have you priced patch panels? They are pretty cheap. I don't know if it's worth the trouble to cut out used pieces when you can buy brand new so cheap.

Check with Capt Kaos for smoking deals.

Re: cutting patch panels at the pick a part

years ago at one of the junkyards in colorado I saw a guy wheel in a generator and an air compressor. I don't know if that's allowed anymore, but it was a funny sight. Really takes the fun away from junkyarding though....

That's the problem with replacement panels "they are cheap" as in cheaply made. The inner rockers and cab corners are nothing like the factory. I just repaired a cab and was lucky enough to have original parts to work with. I would say if you don't mind spending a little more time drilling out spot welds then get the originals if you can.

Re: cutting patch panels at the pick a part

Yeah, I here what you guys are saying about the price of new panels. I don't. Know what they would cost a the pick a part but if its about the same price I would get them there just for fun. I saw some battery saws on ebay for around 20 so I might pick one of those up. The truck doesn't really need them but I want to learn how to put patch panels n I don't mind practicing on my truck

Depends upon what you need and the time required to do the job but it is pretty inexpensive to just get the whole panel at the yard instead of going through the effort to do a patch panel job on things like doors, fenders, hoods, bedsides etc...

A whole bed side for my 67 cost me $15. It was supposed to be $50 but they guy misunderstood the manager when he asked how much they cost. I didn't notice it until I got home

An entire cab is only $175. I'm keeping my eye out for a better cab to start with for my 67 C-10. It needs so much work that if I can find a fairly clean one it will save me much more than the cost of the replacement cab just in time alone fixing body damage and rust. I almost had a perfect cab a few months ago but they crushed it the day before I could get back to the yard with my truck They need a layaway program.

Re: cutting patch panels at the pick a part

I'd check on Craigs List and find someone parting out a truck and get them from him. Then you don't have to deal with the pick a part restrictions.
