12 Bolt Gear Swap

I am new to this board and looking for a little help. I have a 65 C10 with 12 bolt diff and want to swap in 3.08 gears and carrier from a 70's truck 12 bolt. Can I use my original axels? I dont want to change everything over to 5 lug wheels. Thanks for the help.

Re: 12 Bolt Gear Swap

A 72 axle is wider, so you couldn't use them anyway...you will need the side gears from the 72 axle because of a different spline count on the axleshafts..hope this helps

Do like I did and swap out the whole rear end (3.73 - 12 bolt) for a '72 3.08 12 bolt. No mods required.

Re: 12 Bolt Gear Swap

Sicboy,
Do you mean you just swapped out the innards or the whole thing?

The whole thing. The '72 has 6 lugs, same spring perches and is an inch wider on both sides. Even though the rear end is wider, the wheels fit fine within the fender wells (no mods), and it gives the impression of wider wheels.

Re: 12 Bolt Gear Swap

It must have been from a 4x? The 2wd's had a 5 lug bolt pattern starting in '71.
