driveshaft on 72

My friend is in need of a drive shaft for his short wheel step 72. He bought it a few months back without one. He then got a long wheel base with engine and trans we removed and put in his stepside this last week. My 72 has a 1 piece drive shaft, but another 72 on his shop he is painting has a 2 piece drive shaft. I am curious what was stock in 72?

Re: driveshaft on 72

My '71 has a two piece driveshaft because it is a 4 speed. It has to have the slip joint in the middle because the yoke on the 4 speed doesn't slip in and out.

When my son builds trucks with automatics he goes with a one piece.

I don't have a good picture of my front drive shaft, but I have two bad pictures of my 72 K20's.

Re: driveshaft on 72

iirc, 6 cylinders 2wd short beds came with 1 piece. SBC 2wd short and long beds came with 2 piece drive shafts. Not sure on 2wd 6 cylinder long beds or 4x4's. Chris.

Re: driveshaft on 72

4x4's had a single piece rear, due to the length of the tranny + x-fer case.

SWB I6 manual trucks did come with a 1 piece shaft. Probably automatics too. The key to which driveshaft you can find standard is where the engine is mounted and what wheelbase you have.
