I've become a member of the "Square Body" club
This afternoon we will go get an '84 GMC shortbed with 6.2 diesel from down south. Bought it from the son of the original owner. Truck is still on it's MSO title. Original paint, interior, PS,PB,PW,tilt,AC, etc. It all works, except for the relay for the glowplugs are on a momentary switch. Ugly, but it has potential. Plans are for a good scrubbing, a 2/4 drop, and repaint it in original old man white and tan. Drive it until the 6.2 costs more than it is worth, and then swap in a crate motor or LS. No emissions to worry about. I've wanted one of these trucks since I was a kid in the '70's. Sorry about the crappy pics. My camera battery died when we went to look at the truck.

I'd say stick with the original color too! Great to see its fully loaded. Just curious.... how did you want one of these trucks in the 70s? hahaha

Re: I've become a member of the "Square Body" club
I can remember the lowered stepsides from Southern California in Truckin' magazine, with American Racing daisies or Ansen Sprint wheels, and lusting after them. Tried to buy a 1977 stepside in 1984, without success. What really excites me about this truck is the fact it is a diesel. In CA, you don't have to smog them until well after this vehicle was produced.

Looks good man. You don't see many of the short beds with diesel's in them. A guy here in town has one, and it blows my mind everytime. I think the white and tan paint will look sweet.

Re: I've become a member of the "Square Body" club
It has a 700r4, but I haven't found out the rear ratio yet. Where to look?

Re: I've become a member of the "Square Body" club
The build and option sticker should have the axle ratio listed. Look for it on the inside of the glove box door.

Re: I've become a member of the "Square Body" club
Both of the 84's I have had have had the options sticker on the drivers side inner fender under the hood. My old one told me the ratio on it, but the one I have now just says standard rear end.
You can also jack it up and count the rotations of the rear wheels to driveshaft ratio. |

Re: I've become a member of the "Square Body" club
Found the sticker, and just started reading it. States std axle, but what is option VO2? HD trans? Drove it around this morning, and got a couple strange looks.

Re: I've become a member of the "Square Body" club
The more I look at it the better I like it. Drove it around town for the last couple days. Says 24k on the clock, but how to tell if it is 124k? Pedal pads are unworn, doors close well. Engine is very clean and untouched, Goodyear hoses all around. I am starting to really dig this thing.
