Defroster ducting help

I finally started to tear apart everything to see why the defroster never really blows hard. I can see that there its a large gap between the defrost duct and the main duct where the defrost door is. Looks the the defroster is fully seated at the top of the dash and the main duct seem to be bolted solidly on. Am I missing a part? Even if i lower the defrost duct is looks like it would be a poor fit.

My 86 ductwork doesn't fit very good either. I'm gonna try do do something about it while I have it all torn apart. Not really sure yet how to go about it.

Re: Defroster ducting help

Im pretty sure its supposed to be like that. I had a problem with lack of air flow too, until i noticed the baffle door right under duct you posted didnt move. the cable is stuck. so i just slid the cable off the retaining nub, and let gravity do the rest

Re: Defroster ducting help

I wiped everything down with rubbing alcohol and used aluminum tape. The backside was the hardest to seal but I did get it done. I notice no air leaks. I also fixed the blend air door so it shuts all the way. It certainly blows stronger now. Before it was useless. Thanks for everyones help.

Re: Defroster ducting help

The heater in my 86 really blows too, and not in a good way. I've often wondered if there was a way to fix it. I'll have to take a look and see if I have the same problem, and tape it up.
