body work woes
Well I was installing some cab corners this weekend when I ran across a surprise. As I was grinding off the paint so we could weld the patches on, I found a TON of body filler. And it was under the factory paint, or paint color. So either GM bondoed this truck from the factory or the cab had a bit of damage to it a long time ago. And I doubt this is a factory flaw. So it looks like the body work is gonna be a bigger headache that what was first planned. Here is a pic

I've heard of people finding body filler on a factory paint job before.

Hey what's a little extra bondo among freinds! I have heard about bondo from the factory as well. If it held up this long and looked good it was probably done right. You just hate to have to take it all out when redo those corners. How is the welding progressing...is it going to be an ebfabman job? What equipment are you using?

my truck actually looked peiced together when i sanded it down... every so many feet there would be a dark line like two panels had been welded together, made the body almost look like a grid when i was done

the '95 dakota that my bestfriend and I rolled had factory bondo in the weld areas on the cab. Also had some in the corners, as if it was damaged, but not enough t be thrown out. This was on a two owner, never wrecked 17K mile truck.

Well, I am welding with a CLARKE weld 100E MK2. It's a 110v wire feed MIG and we are using 023 wire on it. I haven't used the gas with it yet, but I have heard it's much easier to do with. Only advise I can give, is be patient. It takes a lot more time than you think if it your first time around, like it is for me. I have a couple problems with door alignment on the passanger side, but other than that it's going pretty good. Definately not gonna be near as nice as Ebfabman work. That man is a true artist!!
Oh, that bondo is about 1/4" thick and runs from the bottom of the pillar to the upper body line.

I've concluded that my Camaro had some factory bondo on it. Before I had the body redone, you could look down the central body line and see that it was wavy-both sides. The car was owned by a little ol' lady who kept ALL reciepts. I've heard from others that factory bondo is possible.

sometimes theres bondo frm the factory bu you would think on a truck that old youd find lead filler or something. maybe you could patch the truck alittle higher up to get rid of some of the bondo?
