4.3L V6 in a '67 GMC - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Anyone used a late model 4.3L V6 engine in their truck? There are a ton of them on Craig's List around here right now for within my budget(ie..300 bucks or so and not in need of a rebuild) and my 305 V6 in my '67 GMC is driving me crazy, one part after another after another keeps going and the thing was maintained so badly before I got it that the oil and grease makes all the maintenance a absolute nightmare. Not having a garage and doing all of this work in a friend's driveway is wearing my patience. Not to mention parts for the damn GMC engine are impossible to find, never available locally.

I know most people go with more power but those 4.3 engines were used in full size Silverados throughout the 90s with no problem and I've had one in the past and towed a F150 with no problem and decent gas mileage.

I think the engine uses the same mounts as a small block 350 so maybe I could just get the 350 mounts for my '67 and hook it in that way..transmission mounts might be a bit trickier..would try to find a nice standard tranny to hook it up with.

easy, will bolt to trans just fine, Slide the frame mounts back and rock out

If you can get a later model 4.3. My father's '90s vintage Blazer had a 4.3 that was less than spectacular. Due to my experience with that, I was skeptical when I looked at the 2006 Silverado I own now.

However, after taking it for a ride I was sold. It has Vortec heads, a roller cam, dual cats, and port injection. Once it gets up on the cam it probably has as much wheaties as the 5.0 Mustangs had in the '80s.

A member who I haven`t seen for a while here has a Stepside w/4.3 TBI and 700r4 and it moves along fine as well as gets 20 or better MPG.

your right thw 4.3's get pretty good MPG on the highway

I have a 2000 silverado short bed with a 4.3. It gets decent MPG and has close to 150,000 miles now with no problems.

It has good power and torque for a V6. Great for a daily driver or work truck.

It's not gonna win any races if you're looking for raw power though.

the 4.3L should fit the mounts with no problem bc it was based on the 350 with the back 2 cylinders cut off. ive heard of some of these things making decent power too. nothing like a v8 would but it would be a nice daily driver if thats what your going for.

3.8 turbo Buick!!!! Now there`s some serious V6 power right there,I don`t care who y`are.In the early`90s the Buick Roadmasters ran a huffer.I always wanted that motor.

Thanks for the info to all, I'll pursue picking one of these 4.3's up if it's affordable now. I've had one before and it was a solid work truck that would do anything I've asked of it, my mileage is mostly city/parkway so it's too congested to go that fast even if I wanted. I need to ditch this old gmc engine, having that sense of dread every time you stop at a red light that it will die or everytime you leave an event and your not sure if your car is going to start to get you home has gotten old.

I remember that truck, it was NICE too, it was a 67/68 and I think some kind of champaign? color. The original "board member owner" sold it and another member bought it, but I can't remember either one...

That's another truck I wish I could have bought...

The 4.3L is STILL the base engine in silverados.

Mount it on the 2wd v8 mounts and you could probaly be able to use the fan shroud for a 4x4. I would not be afraid to use the 4.3 in one of these trucks even with the 3.08 gears, I had a 87 1/2 ton with the 4.3 and a granny 4spd with the 3.08 gears and it had plenty of power for what I wanted.

SM465 and the 3.08 would be ideal for a light duty runner....JMO... one step up would be the hydro clutch NV3500 and a 3.73...
