later model tailgate on our trucks?

wondering if anyones tried to use a later model tailgate on our 68-72 fleetside beds. the other day i was at a junkyard and saw later model (80's and 90's) tailgates everywhere for cheap money didnt take any measurements, but the guy said he only wanted like 75 bucks for each. my tailgate is for a chevy (i have a gmc) and seriously warped up the middle and i dont have the cash for a new one. just an idea not sure if they'll bolt up anyone tried them?

Good question...I signed on just to see what the answer is. Maybe post a WTB and see what comes up.

Ive seen the next design on trucks.I`d rather have what you have as long as it opens and shuts and have faith I`d get the money for a correct one. That`s $75 in the wrong direction,IMO.It`s free to leave it alone and you`re $75 toward what you really want.

Re: later model tailgate on our trucks?

To bad your not out here, I would let you mount one of my three I have sitting around to check the fit. I have seen a 69 tailgate on a 75 truck and it gets the job done, but not the other way around. What we have going in my town is 73-87 truck beds on our trucks, there are about 5 of them, now that I don't care for, but again it is whats cheap and works. Good Luck on your search for a gate for your truck.

Re: later model tailgate on our trucks?

Question, is there a reason that a lot of people are looking for old tailgates to put on their trucks rather than buying a new tailgate from, say, LMC? Is it the cost or is there a serious difference in material or what?

I have learned on these pages that there is a SERIOUS difference in material. As in sit your non-fat a$$ on one and it will crease. Now I've put a heck of a lot more weight that my butt on my tailgait and have noticed no ill effects.

Re: later model tailgate on our trucks?

I have seen and herd that they just don't stand up like the originals do. There are always tailgates hiding in barns or garages somewhere, so I know eventually he will find a real nice one.

Hey Bro,
Mabie this will help. Found this over on the parts board. Hope this helps you out; looked like a nice gate.

Nice 69-72 GMC Fleetside Tailgate

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parting out a short fleetside bed.

only have tailgate off and ready for sale.

I can only find one dent on tailgate and it is one the beltline where you see dented upper trim. Rest of gate is very good shape, not bowed, some surface rust along bottom but no rot. Also has complete trim (of which the chrome pieces on the handle and above the handle are very nice and reusable. Asking for $250. Would prefer local pickup, but I can drop off at Chico, CA Greyhound if shipping.
