how big?

how deep of a notch can be used until the trailing arms contact the frame? a simple c-notch or a full on step?

Here's my C-notch with a picture of the trailing arm to frame clearance.

I also flipped my crossmember, so that moves the arms a little more closer to the frame.

At full dump, I have a bit under 1/2" clearance. Of course, with the track bar adjusted to center the rearend at my anticipated ride height, it has more clearance on one side than the other when dumped.

Are you putting the bag in the stock spring location?
You can gain a little more drop if you move the bags to the axle.
You can also use a 2" or 3" block if your wheel diameter is bigger than 15".
