Underbed fuel tank project

Well, its been too long since Ive made any progress on my truck but for the last 4 weeks I spent my winter vacation working at a sheetmetal manufacturing company that a friend of the family owns and Ive had this idea to make this for a long time. I drew out sketches and dimensions of all the pieces. We drew them up in the cad software then punched all the parts on the huge cnc turret punch. I had the break operator bend up the sides and step bend the roll and then I welded the baffles in with a Dynasty 350. My plans are to mount an intank fuel pump for my 5.3l but not quiet exactly sure which one yetHere is a teaser of the progress.

I still need to weld on the extruded angle to the sides so i can mount it to the truck and then figure out which fuel pump Im using so I can cut the hole on the top piece before I weld it on
And oh ya, it makes it soooo much easier when you have the right tools..

Nice work. I think you're gonna have to change your user name here. Rookie? I don't think so.

One thing to keep in mind in regards to the tank width is clearance for the pipes if you are planning to run your exhaust out the back. You will need to allow room for the pipes between the tank sides and the rear springs if you are using that type of rear suspension.

Re: Underbed fuel tank project

Ya I still havent built my 4 link or mounted my coilovers let alone even purchased them, but the tank is only 8 inches in height, 28.5 wide between the fraimrails and 25 inches in length. Its shorter then the production tanks which are 10 inches tall, so mine shouldnt hang so low. Who knows, Ill probably end up routing my exhaust out the side if I have to.

Re: Underbed fuel tank project

Make sure there is enough room in the tank between the baffles for the fuel pump and sending unit. I have a CPP tank and there isn't a center cross baffle so my sender and fuel pump fit nicely in the middle.

Re: Underbed fuel tank project

I had to modify my float because it interfered with the internal baffles (OLP tank).

Re: Underbed fuel tank project

Well I recently bought a stock internal fuel pump assembly out of a 2002 camaro and im planning on mounting it in there. It has the fuel level sensor built in but I believe the ohm rating is 40 to 240. Any one know if there is a way to convert this to 0-90 or 0-30 ohm gauge?

PS
Could any of you guys who have the productions tanks mease how far down the top of the mounting surface is on the side angle brackets to the top of the fuel tank?

thanks

When you get the programming done on the ECU tell them what year pump you have and they call make that change for you. You don't have to change the sending unit.

Re: Underbed fuel tank project

So it turns out because I made the tank 2 inched shorter then originally planned(10") the camaro fuel pump wont compress down far enough to fit inside. 10" would have been the perfect hieght. No big deal, I'll probably end up going with the tanks pump now. Anybody need a camaro pump?

Re: Underbed fuel tank project

hotrod rookie, you can actually shorten those pumps. i did it on my dually project. slide the pump apart, it is two sections. cut the three rods down and shorten the springs and use a flaring tool to flare the tubes back out to hold the springs.

Re: Underbed fuel tank project

hmm, interesting. I'll have to look into that then, did you use this same camaro pump or was it a truck one?
