Interior Plastic Repair

I just wanted to share a product that really works. My console for my suburban had numerous cracks. Epoxy wouldn't stick. Found a product called Plasticfix. First I cleaned and cleaned the complete console. Using a dremel, I stop drilled the cracks and vee'd the cracks. I cleaned and cleaned again. I then used the powder in the kit filled the cracks and dripped the activator on the powder. Allowed it to cure and then sanded down. Cleaned and cleaned again. Sprayed adhesion promoter (S.E.M) and then sprayed color. After two coats dried, I sprayed a wet coat and used a paper towel to simulate the console texture. I've heated it up to 120 degrees and worked it and it didn't crack or chip. Got a couple of pics. Let me know if anyone is interested in more details. It took about 3 hrs over 3 days to complete. It was really easy. Later, Tom

lookin good! Looks like a "Detail Thread" for sure. What kind of paint did you use? I'd love it if my sunburnt door panels could turn out as nice.

Re: Interior Plastic Repair

Is the product you used called Plasticfix or Plastifix?

Plasticfix claims it can do Polyethylene...

Plastifix will NOT work on polyolefin plastics like...
* Polyethylene (PE)
* Polypropylene (PP)
* Thermo Plastic Olefin (TPO)
* Thermo Elastic Olefin (TEO)

Re: Interior Plastic Repair

All,Here's some more details:

The adhesive is Plastifix. It will work on ABS. It's available from Urethane Supply Co. It will work on most interior parts, trim and door panels. I haven't tried it on dash pads yet. I used soap and water to clean first, then with NAPA 6385 and 6386. I used these two cleaning items after all operations. I just followed the instructions that came with the kit. It was about $35. I used less than 1/4 of the kit for about 10 cracks. After application and cure, I sanded with 80 grit and then with 400. Clean and clean-this is the most critical part of any composite/glue repair. Next, I used SEM adhesion promoter per the instructions. I used a Sherwin Williams spray bomb paint. I've used this paint on all the interior on this burb and one that I did at least 8 years ago and it hasn't flaked off yet. After a couple of coats, I sprayed a wet oat and used a paper towel to attempt to match the texture. Attached are pics of the final product and detail pics of the repairs. They're not perfect, but good enough for a farm truck.

Re: Interior Plastic Repair

If no filling is required, but have cracks that just need "glued" back together, MEK (Methyl Ethyl Keytone) works great....
A quart from Ace Hardware will set ya back $11....

Re: Interior Plastic Repair

Just be careful with that Ketone stuff- all of the organic volatiles, in fact. Make sure your not huffing it in the closed basement.
