odometer?

is there a way to tell if your your odometer has turned over before? mine says 49xxx, I don't know a whole lot of the history but I do know it did some sitting for awhile, and it was a farm truck, which could mean it was only driven around the farm and short trips into town to buy supplies. oh and its a 68 if it makes any difference.

Re: odometer?

Usually you can't tell. Sometimes the first numbers don't line up after the rollover but that is not a sure way to tell. Have you checked for grease stickers or any other notes that were written on the truck regarding mileage?

I once bought a truck that had 47,000 on the odometer. It had the owners manual, protecto-plate, etc and the owner said he thought it was original miles. It was a nice original truck and the price was right but it just wasn't nice enough for a 47k truck. I went ahead and bought it and while looking through the owners manual I found that the original owner kept a service log in the back, and the odometer had rolled over in 1988..... I wasn't disappointed because I suspected that was the case. Things aren't always as they seem and unless you are talking to the original owner who can verify the mileage don't put much stock in what someone "thinks".

Re: odometer?

Look for gas, brake, clutch pedals or ignition key for excessive wear.

Remember that these trucks are 40+ years and some of these panels were changed out also. I did it on my 69.

Bottom line, 47K on the old truck engines is equivalent to about 100K on the newer engines.

Check your engine carefully and do what it takes to get the truck running and looking good and don't worry about the odometer. Too many of us put too much emphasis on mileage when it's the whole package that matters.

Definitely agree with that last part! My first '69 Chevy C/20 now has over 400,000 miles on it (owned by my neighbor). It still has the original SM465, Eaton rear end, and is on its 3rd 307 engine. Just enjoy the truck, put as many fun miles on it as you can, and keep smiling...

I went and looked at it and some of them were a little crooked so maybe its rolled over at least once.

Re: odometer?

maybe it did, maybe it didn't.
There's a lot more of these trucks with less than 100K on the clock than you'd think. Crooked numbers don't mean jack. There quality control back then was crap, a LOT of stuff left with crooked numbers and stuff like that.
