1968 K10 Help
I'm a newbie at this and hopefully ya'll can provide me some help. I've own this truck since I was 16 years old and I have to put my truck on hold for a few different reasons: Join the USMC for eight years, got married, money problems, and a couple of other things. I had to take a job out of state and then out of the states for money reasons. Now I have some spending money and would like to get er' running after all these years. I've already got a rebuilt 327, good 465/205, new clutch, fixed up the cab and interior, new cooling systems, all new wiring harnesses, and brand new hard and soft brake lines. I also bought a 76' 3/4 frame for the axles for a future axle swap. It's going to be my hunting/fishing/slight trailing/everyday work truck so I don't need a ton of fancy parts. Just 33's or 35's and 4-6 inch lift. My body and drive train is all good so here is my dilemma:
Looks like the previous owner got into a slight wreck and screwed up all my suspension brackets (truck dog legs down the road) or my axles are bent, but the frame measures good. I was wondering if my 68' body will swap onto a 69-72 K-10 or K-20 frame with any major snags? I've already contacted DIY4X and he is non exactly for sure if the FGB-52 brackets will work because it is designed for a 69-72. I've already threw out the idea to him that if he wants he can us my truck for R&D, but not for sure if he has time for such an oddball year truck. He's very polite and a busy guy. Do ya'll think it's a better route for to do a frame swap (69-72), or try the FGB-52's? I really appreciate all the help and will post pics whenever I get back to the states and start working on er'. Thanks again. Last edited by 1968filbilly; 01-23-2010 at 08:14 AM. |

Re: 1968 K10 Help
I'm 99.9997% sure that 68 body will bolt right on a 71 or 72 4x4 chassis. I'd stick with 71 or 72, they already have disk brakes.

Before you spend money on a different frame (unknown if wrecked) I would take yours to a body shop with a frame rack, it might not cost that much to fix and shouldnt cost much to get an estimate.

Re: 1968 K10 Help
X2, it may be cheaper and easier in the long run to get your frame/mounts trued up, you could just have way worn out bushings causing this.
You also get to keep the matching VIN your frame has. It could save you a title fiasco if you move to a state that is picky about that sort of thing someday.

Re: 1968 K10 Help
The lift kits options are pretty limited and when I threw on a 4 in lift, I noticed that my driver side leaf spring hanger was bolted on!!! The rivets were missing and the plate was all bent up. I got a buddy to fab up a new mount with 1/4 plates, bolted everything on, then i noticed that the leaf spring angled inward, towards the engine. The rear shackle hanger was messed up, but I didn't have any problems when I install a stock replacement shackle kit. That's why I was very interested in the fgb-52, but not for sure if it will work or not. Has anyone installed a fgb-52 kit on a 67 or 68'???
Appreciate all the input. |

Re: 1968 K10 Help
I found a 71 4x4 chassis for my 67 2wd, it is a easy bolt on and while you are at it you can put on new body mounts and/or a body lift.
