Swapping Cabs
This might be a stupid question but I will ask any way.
Will swapping out a cab change the the id of the truck so that you have to register it with new id? Is it that simple or is it more complicated than that? Does it change the year of the original truck to the year of the cab? The reason I ask, if my cab is so far gone (rusted) that I just want to replace it with one that is NOT rusted out, what will be the aftermath? Thanks

Re: Swapping Cabs
Some move the vin plate from old to new to avoid the hassle. Legality of doing that? Illegal in the state of Missouri and probally in all 50 states. Best to get a title with your new cab get with DMV and do the swap the legal way. If it's titleless you can get a new vin assigned title with more work than you have time but better than the time you could spend explaining why to the judge, while your paying tow/storage fees after getting stopped by a trooper.

Re: Swapping Cabs
Thanks guys.
That answers a lot. I guess I will wait until the spring when I can drive my other car before doing any work on the cab.

Re: Swapping Cabs
I have always figured the title came with the cab. So, yeah I guess your building what ever year truck the cab is...
Myself I would do my best to swap the VIN plate, making it look untouched. There are factory rivits available. For more serious issues though, the frame has a VIN code as well (located on the driver side, couple inches above the steering gear). Don't know if they match though. I purchased a truck a while back the had the VIN plate removed and had a N.C sticker on it with a new number. It was a theft recovered vehicle. Last edited by Kayotic; 01-24-2010 at 12:54 PM. |

Re: Swapping Cabs
I would do a good job changing your old vin tag to the new cab so your frame matches your title. I know your not supposed to do it, but you would be supprised how many out there have been changed and no one would ever know.
