??? It is? I used an 83 Firebird 700R4 and even that was a direct "screw on." What's different?

The little square cable on the inside is smaller then the one INSIDE the th400..

My truck was an inline six with 3 speed saginaw in it. Then i put the th400 and 454 in...

Weeeeeeeird! I know there are different lengths for these trucks. Not sure if there was a different end used on the cables?

Re: What is the correct speedometer to use???

The length is ok. I just looks like the square is ALOT smaller then the square in the tranny.. Just spins inside it.

Re: What is the correct speedometer to use???

I bought a replacement cable for my 69 a while back, it was just the inner cable. It came with two crimp on adapters, a small and a large square end piece. Maybe you could go to a parts store and see if they are still available like that, you could just replace the inner cable?

Re: What is the correct speedometer to use???

i will call a few tranny shops tomorrow and see what they have to say.. I think it would be as simple as sliding a bigger square on the smaller square. lol...

Re: What is the correct speedometer to use???

Is the driven gear on the trans stripped? this would make it seem too big. I have seen this before on used trans when the speedo or cable (on the previous vehicle) seized up, then that made the plastic gear in the trans break or strip. Just a thought.

Nope, its all new. Just seems to big. Im going to call that trans place right now. One second.
it appears that the square starts off bigger then tapers down smaller... We will see.
