Dropping a 3/4 ton Suburban?

Hey all I'm the new guy and have a question about lowering a 3/4 ton 1977 Suburban. This is a new toy for me and currently it sits fairly tall and level and is crying to be dropped. I'd like to go about 3" is all and prefer to use spindles up front for at least 2" of that. I called Summit Racing who I get most of my go-fast junk from and they said they don't have a listing for 3/4 ton drop spindles from any of their vendors. A friend sent me the link to these which sound like a great deal. http://www.airbagit.com/product-p/spi-gm7191c.htm

Now I'm having trouble finding a way to drop the rear. An axle flip would be too much, like I say I want 3" at the most. Any suggestions for me? If this has already been brought up is there a thread link? A big THANKS! in advance.

It isn't finished yet but here's the start of my concept drawing so you get the idea. We just bought the truck, it's mostly stock with a great running 454 and fairly new red paint. Trouble is the clear coat on the paint job is peeling badly on the hood and roof. My main business marketing colors are red and black and I'll be using this as my vendor booth hauler for car shows I attend. In the past I've parked my old booth hauler (my Cutlass station wagon) by my booth or entered it in the show so this Burby's got to stand out and look cool too. I thought I'd do something a bit different and re-paint the top half semi gloss black and run 20" rims to match the body color. I'll post the art again when it's done.

POL (PerformanceOnLine) sells a 3/4 ton drop spindle.

Stay away from Airbagit, Chassis Tech, Aim or whatever they're calling themselves these days. They have poor quality parts and high restocking fees.

Thanks for the insight, nothing worse than buying something and it not being what you hoped for.

Any insight on dropping the rear?

Excellent info, thanks. Any further info on their sourcing, quality, history/track record? Thanks.

As for the rear, thinking of removing 2-3 leaves and adding a set of these:

to get back the load capacity. Thoughts?

Re: Dropping a 3/4 ton Suburban?

On occasion I'll be hauling a 3600 lb race car to the track. Race car will be on a basic dual axle car trailer. Throughout the season I'll be hauling my vendor booth stuff to car shows, all my junk will fit in the back of the Burby and maybe weighs 3-400 lbs total. For the most part this will be my wife's daily driver, hauling kids to school and groceries home. I figure if I end up having to tow a lot I can put on those towing helper air bags. Again I don't want to get too radical with it, just want a subtle drop to put the fender lips about level with the top of 29-30" tall tires. Right now they're about 3"+ above them.

I thought perhaps I can pull a leaf or two (?) but I have no experience with how much of a change in height and load capacity this makes. Got something in mind? Looking forward to hearing your ideas...

Is your avatar your ride? I'd love to see more info on your build! Looks awesome!

Check out Cochino12's 3/4 ton shortbed build. He used a shackle hanger kit to get the rear down. You might shoot him a PM.

mine is a 1/2 ton but I pulled the 2 middle leafs out of mine to lower the back, it rode fine and i still did some pulling with it...you just have to place the load right on the trailer. So you should be fine if you do it with a 3/4, and put the bags on there... but you should really think about shackles, I know there is an issue with the passenger side though, for the gas neck...Not to sure how much work it is. The leaf thing is easy but it is trial and error, you have to take the pack apart then put it back together and if its too low then you have to take it back apart...LOL Yea it mine in the ava. Thanks

Nice rendering good luck with it. Just curious how many leaf springs is a half ton supposed to have in the rear?
